Beddington, Director of Wildenstein, Private CollectionExhibited:London, Arts Council of Great Britain, Four Contemporary British Painters, (Leonard Appelbee, Claude Rogers, Ruskin Spear, Carel Weight), 1947, no. 27 'At this time his mother told him a story of vital importance to his development as an artist, As a girl, she had clambered out of an upstairs window and made her way along a narrow, projecting ledge to a neighbour's windowsill, tempted there by the bright blooms in a window-box. People in the street saw her and were terribly worried about her falling, but somehow they got her back.'It introduced another line - humorous fantasy - and he developed it with gusto. It was to become a constant in so many purlieus of Carel Weight's world. 'That gave me an idea for a picture. I moved the scene to the outside of a pub, and substituted a young lad who'd climbed up the inn sign and perched himself precariously on top. He was causing great consternation not only to people in the pub but also among the crowd who'd gathered outside'. - see R.V. Weight, Carel Weight, 1994, page 21 The painting , for which this is the study, was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1933 (No 100) and was instrumental in securing the artist's first teaching job. The painter Henry Carr,, then head of Beckenham School of Art, saw it, liked it, and offered Weight a 2-day-a-week teaching position at the school, Weight accepted and continued to teach at Beckenham until called up for war service in 1942. - see Mervyn Levy, Carel Weight, 1986, page 45.

View from the Artist's Window in Portinscale Road, Putney, 1947, oil on canvas, signed upper left (signed in 1984; see letter from Michael Dawson below), 53 x 29.3 cm (20 7/8 x 11 1/2 ins), framed (67.5 x 43 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Collection of Michael and Megan Dawson. The painting comes with a letter from the artist, 33 Spencer Road, London, SW18, to Michael Dawson, dated 9 May 1984 arranging for Michael to call him, and a letter from Michael Dawson in which he writes ‘This painting by Carol Weight was purchased in the Autumn of 1983 from Abbott and Holder, Picture Dealers in Castelnau, Barnes, London, SW13. It was unsigned, undated & carried misleading labels, so I contacted the artist to establish its provenance. He confirmed that the picture was indeed his, and that in its original form it had been slightly larger – he had decided that by reducing its size he had improved the composition. The work had been the first in a series of South London garden pictures which he had produced slowly after returning from the war: he told me that one of the later pictures in the series had been bought by Sir Anthony Eden. He went on to tell me that this composition was taken from the attic window of his studio in Portinscale Road; unfortunately the building was subsequently demolished to make way for a modern block of flats. His present studio in Keswick Road is just round the corner & it was there that the picture was signed on May 27th 1984. Michael Dawson. P.S. A larger version of this composition, is in the Whitworth Collection, Manchester. 27xi91.'

§ Carel Weight CH, CBE, RA (1908-1997) The Beatitudes I signed to the reverse oil on canvas laid to board 37.5 x 18.5cm Provenance: With Leonie Jonleigh Studio, Guildford Private Collection Sale; Bonhams, 16 September 2014, lot 101 The present work is one of a number of preparatory studies executed by Weight for his 1963 Manchester Cathedral commission. Positioned at the entrance to the Chapter House, Weight's mural is a meticulously crafted composition, seamlessly tailored to complement the original blind tracery. The lower section of the mural hosts seven depictions embodying the Beatitudes: portraying the meek, the mourners, and the merciful. Positioned above, Weight presents Christ delivering his sermon on the mount - arms gracefully outstretched, enveloping his flock in an embrace that defies conventional proportions. While the work maintains a documentary authenticity characteristic of Weight's repertoire, wherein the figures seem to have been observed and drawn from life, the completed work occupies a peculiar trans-temporal location. It transports both the viewer and the subjects to a confluence of 1963 and 30 AD, creating a unique narrative that transcends temporal boundaries, whilst also ensuring the mural reflects the local community. The present lot corresponds to the left-most upper panel of Weight’s completed mural, which can still be seen above the Chapter House today.

I came across this setting in the neglected corner of an old estate. The weather, while I was there was very stormy which made a great mound of sawdust I found look intensely dramatic. I wanted to introduce people into this scene to make a picture which reflected the drama and tension in the air. I have used deep colours and a particular perspective to heighten the tension. The painting presents an enigma which calls upon the viewer to make his own interpretation.'

Carel Weight CH RA (1908-1997) ▴ Carel Weight CH RA (1908-1997) 'Belisha Beacons at Shepherd's Bush, November 1934' inscribed on artist's label verso, oil on canvas board 28 x 35cm Born in Paddington in 1908, Carel Weight’s childhood playgrounds were the broken-down streets, alleys and parks of south-west London; the settings for many of his later paintings. Never one to try to beautify an environment, he often chose to depict the sleazier side of life. He was an only child, and a lonely child, which meant he disappeared into his imagination, a habit that continued and transferred into his artworks. Following his education at the Hammersmith School of Art and Goldsmiths College of Art, he took up teaching and painting, with a studio in Shepherd’s Bush. We see from the label on the back of the present lot that he was living at 5 Shepherd’s Bush Green in 1934, presumably looking out of the studio window at the goings-on below. It is a privilege to see a snapshot of his life in the 1930s as many of his early works were destroyed during the Blitz in 1941. He lost all his materials and in the region of seventy paintings and was forced to start again. 'Belisha Beacons at Shepherd's Bush' is a more straightforward city scene than some of his more unusual compositions, but his trademark strangeness remains, as the faceless crowds bustle along the pavement. Painted when he was only 26 years old, it is more subtle in tone than the vibrancy one may expect from his later works, but as a student Weight was taught that you worked the composition in black and white, and colour was simply an adornment. By the end of his career he had taken influence from Matisse and used colour as a more integral part of the painting. Condition Report: Framed: 39.5 x 47.7cm, minor surface discolouration and dirt. See photos for further details.
