Sebastian Wegmayr (Vienna 1776–1857), Floral Still Life

Wegmayer studied from 1797 to 1805 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Johann Baptist Drechsler. In 1812 he became a professor of flower painting and successor to his teacher Drechsler. Wegmayr followed the Dutch tradition of the 17th century with his flower paintings. With the inclusion of raspberries and blueberries in the flower still life, however, he differs from the old masters in terms of motif. The flowers are in a glass vase on a stone slab. Red, pink and white tones of the flowers dominate the bouquet, the tricolored morning glory (Convolvulus tricolor) sets blue accents in between, blue-green leaves frame the light flowers. WEGMAYR, SEBASTIAN 1776 Vienna - 1857 Vienna, attributed White Court Cockatoo Inscribed on the stretcher with the artist's name. Oil on canvas. 76 x 61,5 cm. Framed. Sebastian Wegmayr studied under Johann Baptist Drechsler at the Vienna Academy of Arts. He specialized on flower and fruit painting as well as on animal still-lives. In 1807 he worked as corrector at the Vienna porcelain manufacture, and was appointed professor in 1812. His works are kept by the Belvedere and the Albertina, Vienna. GERMAN WEGMAYR, SEBASTIAN 1776 Wien - 1857 ebenda, zugeschrieben Weißer Kakadu Auf dem Keilrahmen alt mit dem Künstlernamen bezeichnet. Öl auf Lwd. 76 x 61,5 cm. Rahmen. Nach seinem Studium bei Johann Baptist Drechsler an der Wiener Akademie spezialisierte sich Sebastian Wegmayr auf die Blumen-, Früchte- und wie hier auf die Tiermalerei. Ab 1807 war er Korrektor an der dortigen Manufaktur und wurde 1812 zum Professor ernannt. Seine Werke finden sich im Belvedere und in der Albertina, Wien. Unser Gemälde beweist das künstlerische Können des Malers, der einen Kakadu auf einer Balustrade, eine Weintraube verspeisend zeigt, während er eine herannahende Libelle erblickt; neben ihm eine üppige exotische Pflanze, auf der ein Admiralfalter sitzt, eine Weinrebe und ein samtiger Pfirsich, im Hintergrund eine königliche Parkanlage. Farbigkeit und Stofflichkeit werden in all ihrer Opulenz geschildert.

Collection of Annemarie Shelness and the late Rudolph Shelness of Prague, London, South Salem and Winston-Salem, North Carolina Family history maintains the Wegmayr was acquired in Prague in the mid-1930s, prior to the German Occupation. The family then moved the painting with them to London during the war. It passed down to Mrs. Annemarie Shelness in the 1950s. Craquelure.
