Weger, inscribed under the image: "Nach einer Photographie Stich u. Druck v. Weger in Leipzig Berryer Verlag v. Baumgärtner`s Buchh. August Weger engraved the knee piece of Berryer after a photograph. It shows Berryer as an aged man. Berryer is an impressive figure, his powerful body in dark clothing stands out strongly against the light background. He looks sternly at the viewer. A ring of white hair surrounds his face. S one right hand he has pushed into his waistcoat, his left lies on a pedestal. A curtain in the background underlines the dignity of Pierre-Antoine Berryer. Pierre-Antoine Berryer (1790 - 1868) was a French lawyer and politician. A convinced royalist, he followed Louis XVIII into exile in 1815 during the 100 Days. He defended two generals who switched to Napoleon during the 100 days. He himself had to stand trial for seditious speeches. Berryer was considered a prince spokesman for freedom of the press, having defended numerous journalists. In 1830 he was elected to the National Assembly.
