Gerda Wegener Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1886 - d. 1940

Born in 1886, Gerda Wegener was a fashion designer and painter. She studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and worked as a fashion illustrator for magazines such as Vogue. Many of Gerda Wegener's prints in the Art Deco style were used as modish images in these publications. A scandal erupted when people discovered that the model used for Gerda Wegener's paintings was actually her husband, posing in women’s clothes. The pair resettled in Paris where Gerda’s husband transitioned and took the name Lili Elbe.

This began a new phase of Gerda Wegener's art, and she became well-known for painting lesbian erotica. Gerda Wegener's paintings of Lili were exhibited throughout France and Denmark. The scandal eventually drove Gerda and Lili apart, and Wegener died in 1940. • GERDA WEGENER Two Women in a Window.
        Mar. 23, 2023

GERDA WEGENER Two Women in a Window.

        Est: $10,000 - $15,000

GERDA WEGENER Two Women in a Window. Watercolor, chalk and pencil, circa 1920. 375x285 mm; 14 5/8x11 1/4 inches. Signed in watercolor, lower right recto. Provenance: Private collection, Connecticut. Wegener (1886-1940) handled the current work, the common motif of two women gazing out from a window, between domestic and exterior space, with characteristic sensuality and sinuous line. She repeated this composition in another watercolor and charcoal drawing, also sold at Swann Auction Galleries, June 20, 2019, sale 2514, lot 38. Her spouse and muse, Lili Elbe, served as the model on the left. Together, Wegener and Elbe explored themes of love, sex, gender and mystery in their life and art. Elbe also had success as a painter, primarily under the name Einar Wegener; she is known for her Impressionistic landscapes, many of which depict scenes around Paris. As the first woman to undergo gender confirmation surgery, Elbe became a significant figure in the LGBTQ community. After her successful transition in 1930, she changed her legal name to Lili Ilse Elvenes and ceased painting. Unfortunately, as the methods were largely untested and the surgery was dangerous, she passed away from complications of her fourth surgery. In 2000, a novel loosely based on her life was published and subsequently adapted into a feature-length film, The Danish Girl, in 2015.

        GERDA WEGENER (1886-1940) Musical harem.

        Est: $400 - $600

GERDA WEGENER (1886-1940) Musical harem. Illustration of a quintet of female musicians in an Indian palace, from an unknown publication. Pen and ink on paper. 90x160 mm; 3 1/2x6 1/4 inches. Signed "Gerda Wegener" in lower right margin. Circa 1920. The Danish illustrator and painter Gerda Wegener moved to Paris in 1912 and quickly became known for the superb artistry of her fashion and lifestyle illustrations and advertisements (see lots 19 and 20) in Vogue, La Vie Parisienne, Fantasion, La Guirlande, and many other Parisian magazines. Her style was marked by a playful sensuality though her book illustrations and fine art displayed more highly erotic, mainly Sapphic themes. Her personal life received scrutiny when her spouse and muse, Lili Elbe, also a painter, who went by the name Einer Wegener, became the first woman to undero gender confirmation surgery and became a critical figure in the LGBTQ community. Elbe stopped painting shortly thereafter and eventually died of complications after a fourth surgery. In 2000, a novel based loosely on their lives was published and turned into a feature -length film, The Danish Girl in 2015. Wegener's work remains among the best of the Art Deco period, especially in light of her sucess as a female artist amid her more famous male contemporaries such as Barbier, Brunelleschi, Lepape, and Martin.
