Signed and dated on stretcher "James Weeks 1960", titled and inscribed on stretcher "Benjamin W / Dog Poindexter N.Y.", also a street address at each corner: "184-5st" and "21W56". Note: The "Poindexter, NY" on the verso probably refers to Poindexter Gallery whose records are held aT the Montana Historical Society. Also it should be noted they received the "Poindexter Collection" from George and Elinor Poindexter. A similar painting of a girl with dog dated 1959 was sold at Bonham's San Francisco 10/21/1993 titled "Girl and Dog 1959" SIZE: 57-1/2" x 58". Overall: 51" x 52". PROVENANCE: Probably sold out of the Poindexter Collection prior to the collection gifted to the Montana Historical Society CONDITION: Surface grime and long craquelure lines throughout. 52227-11

DOA 26.25 x 20.75 in. A first generation member of the Bay Area Figuration, Weeks' work may be found in the collections of such prominent institutions as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. Vernon Pratt met Weeks while in San Francisco. A great friendship developed between the two artists and Pratt counted Weeks among his greatest influencers.
