Edwin Lord Weeks Sold at Auction Prices

Orientmaler, Genre Painter, Landscape painter, Painter, Illustrator, b. 1849 - d. 1903

(b Boston 1849; d Paris 1903) American Painter. Along with Frederick Arthur Bridgman, Edwin Lord Weeks is one of the best known American Orientalists painters. Weeks' parents were wealthy merchants from Boston who supported their son's great interest in travel and painting. In 1874 Weeks journeyed to Paris intent on joining the studio of Jean-Leon Gérôme. However whilst waiting for his application to be accepted he started to study under Léon Bonnat, who instilled in his pupil the need for absolute realism and a love of colour. Weeks' experimental use of brilliant colours and daring brushwork owes a debt to Bonnat's teacher, the Spanish painter Mariano Fortuny y Marsal. The early enthusiasm that Weeks showed for painting in Spain and Morocco was consistant with Fortuny's example. Priding himself on his use of colour, he describes himself as a 'colourist' rather than as an 'Orientalist', choosing to define his work in terms of its artistic treatment rather than its subject matter. It is believed to have been built during the reign of the pharaoh Khafre in the 4th dynasty (c. 2558–2532 BCE) and is one of the largest and oldest statues in the world. The Great Sphinx of Giza is notable for its colossal size and enigmatic expression, as well as for the mystery surrounding its original purpose and significance. While it is commonly believed to have served as a guardian of the pyramids or as a symbol of Royal power, its exact function remains uncertain.

(55.9 x 46.4cm) Provenance The Artist. The Estate of the Artist. American Art Galleries, New York, sale of March 15-17, 1905. Private Collection, Rhode Island.  Lot Essay Edwin Lord Weeks, explorer, expatriate, and renowned American Orientalist, has long been celebrated for his views of India, North Africa, and the Middle East. Weeks traveled extensively throughout his career, capturing the rich colors, intricate details, and cultural tapestry of the cities and sites he visited. His works romanticized and idealized distant lands, frequently presenting a Western perspective on what was then believed to be picturesque, exotic, or mysterious. The result of Weeks's travels was a near encyclopedic account of landscapes, architecture, and everyday life. Juxtaposing meticulous attention to detail with a keen sense of place, he animates his scenes by way of intricate compositions and a measured palette. His depictions of streets, spaces, and architectural landmarks–from the unassuming to the grandiose–generally eschew sentiment and stereotype and, instead, champion authenticity and cultural richness. Alongside its technical proficiency and aesthetic appeal, there is an ethnographic value to Weeks’s output. His oeuvre, then, approximates a kind of visual anthropology; he documents the diversity of society, from a quiet street scene, as in the present work, to bustling markets and bazaars, among other subjects. Weeks was not only attracted to external beauty—the rhythmic façades of monumental and vernacular architecture, for instance—but to the spirit of a region that fascinated him and his contemporaries deeply.
