WEEGEE [ARTHUR FELLIG] (1899-1968) Fire Rescue, New York. Circa 1940; printed 1960s. Silver print, the image measuring 13⅜x10½ inches (34x26.7 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Weegee's 451 West 47th Street and Credit Weegee the Famous stamps on verso. This photograph by Weegee was published on the front page of New York's daily PM newspaper in March 1941, after a fire tore through a lower East Side tenement building on a cold New York night, sending some 50 families fleeing onto the street below. As with most Weegee photographs, the identities of the man, the child and the firefighter in the picture are unknown. But in his 1946 book Naked City, Weegee accompanied the photo with this caption: "This man was lucky ... he hadn't gone to bed as yet ... but the rooms got full of smoke ... the lights went out ... so he grabbed his kid ... without tying the kid's shoelaces ... and ran for his life. He is surprised to find me there with my camera. He must wonder if my studio is on the fire engine ... and if I sleep in the Fire House." Provenance Purchased from a private dealer in 2002; to the Present Owner Publication Fellig, Arthur (Weegee), Weegee's Naked City (Da Capo Press, New York) 1975, p. 80

WEEGEE [ARTHUR FELLIG] (1899-1968) Murder in Hell's Kitchen. 1941. Silver print, the image measuring 10⅝x13¾ inches (27x35 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Weegee's 451 West 47th Street and Credit Weegee the Famous stamps, and an additional notation in pencil on verso. Taken by Weegee the night of February, 7, 1941, this photo shows local residents peering out their apartment block windows as police below investigated the murder by a lone gunman of Emil "The Polack" Nizich, a 26-year-old unemployed longshoreman walking in the rain near his home on W. 48th Street. The murder was one of a spate of recent shooting deaths attributed to feuding among rival dockworkers along the Manhattan waterfront. Weegee had rushed to the scene with his camera after learning of the murder from police and photographed Nizich's dead body lying on the pavement, as well as the local residents gawking at the police conducting their investigation. Weegee published both photos side by side in his 1946 book Naked City, with a caption laced with irony: "Murder in Hell's Kitchen One looks out of the windows ... talks about the weather with a neighbor ... or looks at a murder." WEEGEE; ARTHUR FELLIG (Ukraine, 1899- 1968). "Circus Biker," c. 1943. Gelatin silver photograph. Slight damage to the frame. Presents stamp on the back "Credit photo by Weegee-The Famous". Measurements: 18 x 13,5 cm; 40x 30,5 cm (frame). Arthur Fellig known by his pseudonym Weegee, was a photographer and photojournalist, praised for his raw photographic style, which presented the street scene in New York City, usually portrayed in black and white. Weegee worked on Manhattan's Lower East Side as a press photographer during the 1930s and 1940s. He developed his signature style by following the city's emergency services and documenting much of their activity. For that reason his compositions depict realistic scenes of urban life, crime, and death. Weegee published books on photography and also worked in film, initially making his own short films and later collaborating with filmmakers such as Jack Donohue and Stanley Kubrick. One of his first jobs was in the photo lab of The New York Times Later, during his employment with Acme Newspictures, his skill and ingenuity in developing live prints earned him the name "Mr. Squeegee." Most of his photographs were taken with equipment and aesthetic guidelines typical of press photographers. He was a self-taught photographer with no formal training. Some of his photos reflect a juxtaposition between the representation of people from high society, along with others who do not belong to the same social circle. Weege's work is widely recognized nationally and internationally and his works are in important private and public collections. In addition, his work continues to generate interest after his death, an example of this was the exhibition Weegee's New York, held in 2009 at the Fundación Telefónica in Madrid. It has slight damage to the frame.

Weegee was the pseudonym of Arthur Fellig (June 12, 1899 – December 26, 1968), a renowned American photographer and photojournalist. He is best known for his work in New York City during the 1930s and 1940s, particularly his gritty and candid photographs of crime scenes, accidents, and everyday life in the city. Here are some key points about Weegee and his photography:1. **Nickname Origins**: Weegee earned his nickname from the Ouija board becae of his seemingly uncanny ability to arrive at crime scenes shortly after they occurred. He had a police radio in his car, which allowed him to get to the scenes quickly.2. **Crime Scene Photography**: Weegee's most famo work involves documenting crime scenes, accidents, and emergencies. His stark black-and-white images captured the raw and unfiltered realities of life in the city. His images often included onlookers, police officers, and victims.3. **Tabloid and Newspaper Work**: Weegee's photographs were regularly featured in tabloid newspapers like the New York Daily News and PM. His work helped define the genre of tabloid journalism and provided a graphic and often sensationalized view of crime in New York City.4. **Street Photography**: Beyond crime scenes, Weegee also captured the essence of New York City street life. His candid shots of people, both at leisure and in moments of hardship, offer a unique perspective on the city's social fabric.5. **Photography Techniques**: Weegee often ed a Speed Graphic camera equipped with a flash bulb, which allowed him to take photographs in low-light conditions, such as nighttime crime scenes. This distinctive style contributed to the dramatic and high-contrast look of his images.6. **Book**: He published a book titled "Naked City" in 1945, which compiled many of his iconic photographs. The book's title reflects the raw and unfiltered portrayal of life in New York City that Weegee was known for.7. **Legacy**: Weegee's work has had a lasting impact on street photography and photojournalism. His ability to capture the essence of urban life and his pioneering e of flash photography influenced many photographers who followed in his footsteps.Weegee's work provides a glimpse into the darker and more chaotic aspects of urban life in mid-20th century New York City, making him an important figure in the history of documentary photography. Measures 24 x 20.

          Est: €2,400 - €3,000

WEEGEE, ARTHUR FELLIG (1899–1968) | 'The Critic', New York City, November 1943 Image Size: 18,4 x 20,5 cm English: Gelatin silver print, printed in the 1980s on double-weight semi-matte paper 20,4 x 25,3 cm, in excellent condition. Photographer's stamp with address "451 W. 47 Street, New York" on the reverse. LITERATUR Weegee, The naked City, New York 1945, p. 131 (titled). PROVENANCE From the collection of Hans-Jürgen Burkard, Hamburg. Weegee became famous for his night-time shots of accidents, murders, homeless people and outlaws. A harsh lighting style with frightening immediacy and drastic realism characterises his images. "The Critic" is one of his most published photographs and shows the class differences between New York high society and the working class population. It was taken in front of the Metropolitan Opera, where two dressed-up, wealthy old patrons of the house are striding towards the entrance. Suddenly, a poorly dressed woman stands next to them, pressing her handbag convulsively against her body as if it contained all her belongings. This is the moment when Weegee presses the shutter release and thus snatches a symbol of social conditions from reality. However, he had the lady in the cheap coat specially recruited beforehand, allegedly also "bottled", in order to consciously stage this contrast. Deutsch: Silbergelatineabzug, geprintet in den 1980er Jahren auf halbmattem "double-weight" Papier 20,4 x 25,3 cm, in ausgezeichnetem Zustand. Rückseitig Fotografenstempel mit Adresse "451 W. 47 Street, New York". LITERATUR Weegee, The naked City, New York 1945, S. 131 (dort betitelt).
