Webster became known for his genre pictures, often with children as subjects, in which he depicts everyday occurrences in an ingenious and humorous way. Many of them were extremely popular, especially his Punch and Judy (1840), with which he made associate membership of the Royal Academy. Webster was unrivaled in the limited range of subjects he made his own. Signed lower left. Good condition. England, 19th century. H x W approx. 50 x 66 cm, splendidly framed.

      ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS WEBSTER RA (BRITISH 1800-1886) Rustic interior with little girl Signed with monogram, lower left Watercolour 27 x 23.5cm (10 1/2 x 9in) Thomas Webster achieved great success as a genre painter, producing small-scale paintings in both oil and watercolour throughout his long career. His most famous and popular work, The Village Choir, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Charles Dickens thought Webster such a good painter of children that he commissioned him to paint Squeers School-Dotheboys Hall, an illustration to his novel Nicholas Nickelby.

      This lot features an original oil on canvas genre scene painting attributed to or by Thomas Webster RA. Thomas Webster was an English painter of genre scenes of school and village life, many of which became popular through prints. He lived for many years at the artists' colony at Cranbrook in Kent. Signed "T. Webster" lower right register and dated 1806. This date of 1806 is questionable as it does not fit Webster's time-line. The date is either not 1806 and is, in fact,1866 or the painting was posthumously incorrectly dated. However, if the painting was posthumously dated, it was done so within the same relative period as the paint does not fluoresce under a black light.
