        E. AMBROSE WEBSTER Summer Garden, Provincetown.

        Est: $15,000 - $20,000

        E. AMBROSE WEBSTER Summer Garden, Provincetown. Oil on canvas, 1916. 510x610 mm; 20x24 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right recto. Provenance: Estate of Mervin Jules (artist), Provincetown, Massachusetts; thence by descent to current owner, private collection, Delaware. According to the Provincetown Artist Registry, "In 1900, Webster [1869-1935] acquired his white house at 180 Bradford Street on the Provincetown hill overlooking the bay. This house with its still distinctive roof and decorated eaves appears in Webster's own paintings as well as in paintings by Demuth, Stubbs and others. His Summer School of Painting, started at this time, lasted until his death in 1935. This was to be the first modernist school in Provincetown. As a teacher, Webster with his low key, analytical style evoked in his loyal band of students deep affection, respect and an enduring influence on their painting. This abiding influence is confirmed in reports of conversations with his students, among them Charles Darby, Fritz Fuglister and Kenneth Stubbs. In a 1919 interview, Webster said 'I started a school for the same reason all painters do. I have an analytic mind and when I know something that I think will help someone else, I like to pass it on.' He went on to state: 'Painting should be taught like mathematics, as a science. You can't teach talent or inspiration but you can teach painting.'"

        E. AMBROSE WEBSTER Massachusetts, 1869-1935 "Red House Provincetown". Signed lower right "E. A. Webster". Titled on gallery label verso. After early studies under Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson in Boston, E. Ambrose Webster spent nearly three years in Europe with Post-Impressionists. Upon his return to the United States in 1900, he had developed his characteristic style that reveled in light and color. Webster's career spanned 40 years, consistently within the Modernist movement. He traveled and exhibited widely and maintained connections with artists around the globe, from Henry Matisse to Charles Hawthorne and Edward Hopper."Red House, Provincetown" was described in a 1968 Art News article as "an extraordinary, independent painting". Here the light is glowing, with a warm and almost palpable intensity, and the interwoven organic forms are contrasted by the stark geometry of the house. It is also distinguished by its extensive provenance and exhibition history. The painting was in the collection of the artist and his wife, and it remained in the family for nearly 80 years. Oil on canvas, 20" x 24". Framed 30" x 36".

        E. AMBROSE WEBSTER, Massachusetts, 1869-1935, "The Cabbage Patch, Bermuda"., Oil on canvas, 34" x 24.5". Framed 41" x 31.5".

        Est: $15,000 - $20,000

        E. AMBROSE WEBSTER Massachusetts, 1869-1935 "The Cabbage Patch, Bermuda". Estate signed lower right "Webster". Provenance: The artist to a private collector, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A Cape Cod Estate. Eldred's, November, 21 2009, Lot #1039. Driscoll Babcock Galleries, New York. When Eldred's originally sold this painting November 20, 2009, the painting was unsigned and in what was likely its original frame. Affixed to the back of the frame was a label that read "Cabbage Patch, Bermuda E. Ambrose Webster". The frame has since been replaced and, unfortunately, the label is no longer present. After the 2009 sale the painting ended up in the care of Dr. John Driscoll of Driscoll Babcock Galleries in New York. Dr. Driscoll was a noted scholar and maintained a relationship with the Webster estate. The gallery handled part of the artist's estate and exhibited this painting along with others from the estate in the 2016 exhibition, "E. Ambrose Webster: The Primacy of Color", January 7-March 5, 2016. The painting now bears an estate-signed and authorized stamped signature to the lower right. As part of Dr. Driscoll's extensive research, he thought that rather than Bermuda, as the original label suggested, it is possible this is a lost work depicting Jamaica that was originally exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show in New York. Oil on canvas, 34" x 24.5". Framed 41" x 31.5".

Provenance: The Collection of Dr. Edward Sleeper, Boston, Massachusetts; then by descent. Literature: Scott, Gail R., E. Ambrose Webster: Chasing the Sun - a Modern Painter of Light and Color, Manchester, VT, 2009, p. 152 (illus). Other Notes: - Babcock Galleries, New York label verso - Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh label verso E. Ambrose Webster is considered one of the preeminent American Fauvists, best known for the striking colorwork found in his mature style. After beginning his artistic studies at the School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Webster traveled to Europe in 1896, a turning point in his career. Deeply influenced by the bright colorwork of Monet, van Gogh, and Matisse that he saw during his travels, Webster shifted away from the traditional academic style in which he had been trained, instead drawing to a saturated rendering of light and color. He returned to America and settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1900, opening the Webster Art School. Thirteen years later, he exhibited two works at the seminal 1913 Armory show. Throughout his career, he was celebrated by peers such as Edward Hopper, Maurice Prendergast, and Richard Diebenkorn. The present work, painted in 1918, is an early example of Webster's shift away from landscapes toward the human form. Webster began to paint local women he encountered in his travels, seating them outdoors in bright light as he studied the interplay of light and shadow on their bodies. In these portraits, the women's forms take up much of the composition, the soft-hued background landscape becoming secondary to the vividly painted figure in the foreground. Consuela is a strong example of these portraits, and the thick, confident brushstrokes, the boldly rendered purples of her cloak, and the striking rendering of light across her face are all hallmarks of this transformative period of Webster's career.
