Grand Portrait of a Farmer, Heinrich A. Weber, 19th Century

    Est: €1,760 - €2,200

Oil on canvas Germany, 2nd half of the 19th century Heinrich A. Weber (1843-1913) – Munich portrait and genre painter Signed and inscribed upper right, “Heinr. Weber” and “München” Grandiose character portrait of a Swabian farmer with a three-cornered hat and Ulmer pipe High-quality profiled frame by F. G. Conzen, Düssedorf Overall dimensions, framed: 55 x 47 cm Very good condition This grandiose character portrait of a Swabian farmer, wearing a three-cornered hat with an Ulmer pipe in his mouth, was done by the Munich portrait and genre painter Heinrich A. Weber (1843-1913). The coloristically well-balanced composition in oil shows adept brushwork with fine details. The motif could have been painted in a pub or tavern. The portrayed farmer delightfully draws on his pipe and contentedly smiles at the viewer. In Munich painting during the second half of the 19th century, for example in the circles of Franz von Defregger, Eduard von Grützner, Hugo Kaufmann or Hugo von Kotschenreiter, the character portrait as well as the Alpine genre, with a humoristic touch in accordance with prevailing tastes, rank highly. A beautiful painting from the artist’s main oeuvre. The painting and the high-quality profiled frame by F. G. Conzen, Düsseldorf, are in very good condition. The painting is signed and inscribed upper right, “Heinr. Weber” and “München”. The dimensions are 55 x 47 cm (framed) and 33.5 x 25.5 cm (unframed) Heinrich A. Weber (1843-1913) Heinrich A. Weber became known primarily as a portrait and genre painter. He studied at the Munich academy under Wilhelm von Diez and subsequently worked alternately in Munich and his hometown of Esplingerode. Weber’s works were exhibited at the great art exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden, Munich and Vienna. Like Franz von Defregger, Heinrich Weber’s work revolves around Alpine genre painting, but with a more humourous note. Characteristic and well-preserved works of the artist are only rarely seen in the art market today. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
