Marine scene in which the artist presents us a view of the sea with a slight swell, in which two ships are arranged in the centre of the composition. One of them is wrecked and a dark-coloured vapour is rising from its chimney, indicating the ship's problems. Next to this ship, another with large masts with sails hanging from them stands imposingly. Thus, this scene, which appears to depict a simple navy, also shows a debate between tradition and the new, the sail engine and the steam engine, at odds with each other. William Edward Webb was a British painter known as a leading marine artist. His pictorial output is mainly based on marine paintings of high quality, this being the genre of painting he cultivated most. A permanent resident of Manchester, Webb frequented the coasts and harbours of Britain extensively, producing an impressive number of active scenes celebrating the challenges faced by those who plied their trades on the open seas. Webb exhibited more than 60 paintings between 1890 and 1904, mostly in his home town, but also at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and three times at the Royal Academy in London. Greater commercial recognition came to Webb posthumously, partly through the efforts of author Denys Brook-Hart.
