James (1825) Webb Sold at Auction Prices

Naval painter, Landscape painter

Artist James Webb was born in London in 1825 into an artistic family; his father and brothers were artists. Inspired by the romantic styles of Constable and Turner, painter James Webb uses pale colors to bring a soft atmosphere to his marine landscapes. Galleries worldwide, such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., National Maritime Museum, The Tate, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne display his art. James Webb's maritime paintings at The Royal Academy were exhibited for 35 years up to 1888.

Artist James Webb made England, Wales, and Europe his main landscape and maritime subjects. He died in 1895. Webb's oils have been know to fetch up to $64,000 at Christie's, London. Collectors can find rare, atmospheric maritime paintings at Invaluable.

James Webb, British 1825-1895 On the Ganges; oil on canva

        Est: £6,000 - £8,000

James Webb, British 1825-1895 On the Ganges; oil on canvas, signed, inscribed and dated 'On the Ganges James Webb. 72-4' (lower right), 61 x 91.5 cm. Provenance: H. Fitzpatrick.; Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 4 February 1972, lot 151.; where purchased by the uncle of the present owner. Note: Among the many paintings by James Webb in public collections across Britain, most are of European views but there are a few beautiful examples of the artist's work painted further afield. In the present work, Webb has created a palpable sense of warmth through his adoption of golden tones, set against the cooler blue hues in both the sky and water, whilst his thick application of paint, particularly on the white domes of the city, convincingly evokes the glittering reflection of the sun's light.

Unten rechts signiert und datiert: J. Webb 75. 46 × 61 cm. Provenienz: - St. Anna-Galerie, Zürich, bis 1955. - Sammlung Georges Gangloff, Basel, bei obiger Galerie erworben. - Schweizer Privatbesitz. ---------------
