      Webb, Edward: The Berlin Wall

      Est: €500 - €750

The Berlin Wall. 1989/90/printed 2019. 2 large-format matte gelatin silver prints. 40,3 x 40,5 cm. Titled, annotated, numbered 1/1 and dated by the photographer in pencil on the verso. Edward Webb, born in Colorado in 1963, began studying and practicing photography in Berlin after completing a tour of duty with the US Army there, first with Central Texas College (AA Photography), then with the University of Maryland (BA Art History). He lived in Berlin from 1984 to 1999, after which he moved to New Mexico, where he still resides. His main focus during the Berlin period was 35mm and 120 street photography; in New Mexico he has been concentrating on portraits and landscapes with large-format (4 x 5 to 16 x 20) cameras and vintage lenses with qualities selected specifically for individual projects. His exceptional craftsmanship is reflected in the various series he has produced using wet-plate negatives (portraits) and albumen, cyanotype and salted prints (landscapes), in addition to conventional emulsions and papers. – Edges slightly curled, otherwise in excellent condition. - Sollten Sie detailliertere Zustandsberichte wünschen, kontaktieren Sie uns bitte. / Should you need more detailed condition reports, please contact us.

The sketchbook of Edward Webb (1805-1854). Edward Webb studied under Copley Fielding and David Cox. With Cox, he toured Scotland in 1834, Wales in 1837 and 1840 and Sevenoaks in 1841. He visited Paris with John Pye as well as making other British tours. The gilt leather insert to the front cover of this sketch book reads ''Sketches of A Tour 1844, Edward Webb Esq''. There are 22 sketches in brown crayon, one titled ''Loch Earne'', which suggests the tour was of Ireland. The almost abstract technique used by Webb for these sketches is most unusual for the period. There are collections of Webb's work in The British Museum and The Victoria and Albert Museum. Also included in this lot is a copy of the biographical article on Edward Webb published in ''The Connoisseur''.
