As an important representative of fine art photography and Pictorialism, Vienna-born Hans Watzek, alongside Hugo Henneberg and Heinrich Kühn (»Das Kleeblatt«), was responsible for many innovations in photography. From the later part of 1895 he was experimenting with the then new processing technique of gum bichromate prints. This technique enabled photographers to creatively intervene with the picture, almost like a painter, the soft contours went well with the at the time fashionable style of the Vienna Secession. After Watzek's death Alfred Stieglitz published five of his photographs as gravures in his magazine Camera Work (No.13, 13th of January 1906). Original prints of Watzek, like this large-format gum print, are rarely offered on the art market.
