    British, 1817-1904 Study for the Head of Noah for "Noah Building the Ark" from Dalziel's Bible Gallery Black and white chalk on brown paper 14 1/2 x 11 5/8 inches (36.8 x 29.5 cm) Frame 24 3/4 x 21 5/8 inches (63 x 55 cm) Provenance: Julian Hartnoll Gallery, London J. X. Reynolds & Co., Ltd., London George and Edward Dalziel, wood-engraving publishers in London, worked with a variety of important Victorian artists to produce illustrations for the book and magazine market during the second half of the 19th century. In 1863 they began a project for an illustrated bible, which was finally published in 1881 as Dalziel's Bible Gallery: Illustrations from the Old Testament. George Frederic Watts was commissioned to create the illustrations for the story of Noah, for which this drawing of Noah's head is a study. Hinged to the mat at upper right and upper left with white tape. Heavily foxed. Creasing at lower right and left corners.
