Ernest Watson (1884-1969) American, Color Woodblock. Signed bottom right. Dated January 1926 and titled "The Harbor" bottom left. Depicts lush hills around a body of water, with enormous clouds billowing above. Overall size: 15 X 16 in. Sight size: 9 1/2 X 9 1/2 in. #1567 . Ernest Watson born in Conway, Massachusetts in 1884. He studied at the Boston Normal School in 1906, then at the Pratt Institute in New York in 1907. Watson joined the Pratt faculty where he taught from 1908 to 1929, becoming a nationally famous innovator in the use of linocut prints. In 1915 he founded the Berkshire Summer School of Art, and wrote many books on art techniques including one in 1929 on his specialty of linoleum block prints. In 1937 he co-founded the publishing company Watson and Guptill, which was the first American company to specialize in art technique and instruction. Watson also created illustrations, pencil drawing and watercolors alongside his wife Eva. His works found their way into collections at the Smithsonian, Boston Public Library, Library Of Congress, New York Public Library, the Print Club Of Rochester and the Brooklyn and Baltimore Art Museums. He was awarded a gold medal by the Pratt Institute in 1965 for his distinguished service. He passed away in New Rochelle, New York in 1969. Location Box 5
