WATRIN CISELEUR PARIS' Overall Height: 33.5 cm Good Condition Provenance: Private collection Berlin Characteristic Chryselephantine originated around the fin de siècle, rare and graceful work of an artist who died too young This graceful Chryselephantine was created by the young artist Etienne Watrin around 1900. It shows a young woman in ornate Elizabethan costume, who hands a coin from your open purse. Her hands and face are carved from ivory, as well as the coin in her right hand, the gilded robe and headdress are cast of bronze. Our sculpture is mounted on a profiled veined marble base. Historicist subjects were particularly popular in the late 19th century. Artist groups such as the 'Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood' turned against the academic traditions and were guided by the late Medieval and early Renaissance art, they were inspired by Shakespeare as well as other myths and legends which they used to mystified in theirs works. In the course of this their art came close to the Art Nouveau and Symbolism movement. The sculpture is signed on the back of the robe 'E. WATRIN CISELEUR PARIS' and is in good condition. The ivory shows slight material-related hairline cracks. The base is slightly bumped at one edge on the back. The figure measures 31 cm in height, the overall height is 33.5 cm.
