          Franklin C. Watkins (American, 1894-1972)

          DESCRIPTION: Franklin Chenault Watkins (American, 1894-1972). Oil on canvas. Reclining nude. Unsigned. In a gilded gesso frame. Franklin Watkins born in 1894 in New York but grew up in Philadelphia and was known for painting in the style of "dramatic realism" which emerged during the 1920's. He trained in art at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1913 to 1918 but was interrupted by World War I where he served as a civilian wartime ship camouflage artist. After his service he worked as a commercial artist and studied across Europe before embarking on a career in teaching, first at the Tyler School of Art, the Philadelphia College of Art and later the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. PROVENANCE: Consigned by Boris Blai's stepdaughter by his second wife. Blai and Watkins were both contemporaries and friends - a portrait of Blai by Watkins is in the collection of The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. MEASUREMENTS: 24-1/2" x 24". Overall with frame 29-3/4" x 29-1/2". CONDITION: Wear to frame.
