Richard Wastell Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1974 -

Richard Wastell - I was awarded the first Dombrovskis Wilderness Residency to Lake St Clair spending three months there in mid-winter 1997. This residency came at an important time in my developing career – less than a year after finishing an honours degree in painting at the School of Art at Hobart. In effect the Lake St Clair residency was my first professional engagement as an artist. It was cold, lonely and challenging but I made the work that would become my first solo exhibition at Bett Gallery, Hobart in 1998 and developed my passion for the high-country landscapes of Tasmania which I maintain in my life and art to this day.

Richard Wastell was born in Hobart in 1974. He studied at UTAS in Hobart, gaining a BFA (Honours) in 1996. In 1997 he was awarded the Dombrovskis Wilderness Residency at Lake St Clair in the famous Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park.

He has held 14 solo exhibitions in Hobart, Devonport, Melbourne and Sydney since 1998 and been included in numerous group exhibitions nationally and in Asia. He is collected in many important public and private collections in Australia and in private collections internationally. He lives and works in Glenorchy, Tasmania.
