          Est: $800 - $1,200

Abel George Warshawsky (1883-1962) Oil on canvas portrait of a woman. Cleveland Impressionist landscape painter, Abel Warshawsky left Cleveland for New York in 1905 and then spent some years in Paris as an expatriate. In 1910, he returned to Cleveland where he taught art with William Sommer and exhibited paintings continuously through the 1940s. He was born on December 28, 1883, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, though he grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He studied with Louis Rorimer at the Cleveland Art Institute, with additional work at the Art Students League, and the National Academy of Design, the latter two institutions in New York City, where Warshawsky went in 1905. The artist traveled to Paris in 1908, where he met Amedeo Modigliani, Paul Signac and Auguste Renoir, as well as American artists Winslow Homer, Leon Kroll, Hugo Robus and William Zorach. Though he returned to Cleveland in 1910, where he was a member of the Cincinnati Art Club and taught with William Sommer, he maintained a studio in Paris for thirty years, and was quite active in the art world there. He traveled often through France and Italy, returning on a yearly basis to the United States to sell his work, exhibiting from the 1910s to the 1950s. With the death of his first wife, and war threatening in the 1930s, Warshawsky left Europe, building a studio in Monterrey, California, teaching classes, painting portraits, and figures against the backdrop of the Northern California coastline. Warshawsky, a member and president of the Carmel Art Association, was a painting partner and friend of California artist Sidney Sargent Freeman. Warshawsky painted portraits of John W. (Jack) Raper, 1870-1950, a columnist for "The Cleveland Press" in 1940, and his brother David, 1893-1989, in 1944 in Taxco, Mexico, which are in the collection of the City Club of Cleveland. The latter was a gift to the collection by the sitter's son and his wife, David and Lee Warshawsky. Abel Warshawsky's younger brother, Alexander L. Warshawsky, 1887-1945, was also a painter. The 1920 portrait of his wife, titled "Paris Unconquered," is set against a background vista of that city. The painting served as the frontispiece of his book of the same title, published in 1957. "Memories of an American Impressionist", a book about Abel G. Warshawsky, edited by Ben L. Bassham, was published by Kent State University Press, in 1980. Nancy Dustin Wall Moure's article, "Abel Warshawsky," appeared in Art of California, in September 1990. His work was part of the exhibition, in 2002, "The Many Faces of Cleveland: A Century of Portraiture", at the Cleveland Artists Foundation. Abel Warshawsky died in 1962. Abel Warshawsky has five paintings in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, as well as work in the Minneapolis Art Institute, Minnesota; Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; and the Luxembourg Museum, Paris, France. His papers from 1930-1960 are in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. They include a manuscript of the artist's unpublished autobiography, "My Brush with Life," as well as typescripts of two versions of Warshawksy's autobiography, "The Autobiography," and "Adventures with Color and Brush," which is a revision of the former, ending in 1941. Letters to his second wife, Ruth; six albums of photographs of artwork; sketchbooks and miscellaneous other materials are also included.

          Est: $800 - $1,500

Abel George Warshawsky (American, 1883-1962) Oil on canvas portrait. Largely a painter known for his busy, impressionistic scenes of life on the streets of Paris, Abel Warshawsky spent about thirty years in France. He mastered two styles: his own variant of French impressionism and a striking realism, which he applied to his many penetrating and superb portraits. While his street scenes are modern in their depiction of boisterous, fleeting contemporary activity, the portraits embody the spirit of Old Europe. Their sincerity and integrity have a counterpart in the portraits of Charles W. Hawthorne, the great teacher of Provincetown. In spite of their debt to the doctrines of late nineteenth-century French naturalism, Warshawsky's portraits have more distant roots.

Paris on Parade, 1922 Oil on canvas h. 32 w. 39 in. Identified on old label, Artist Colorman on verso, no apparent signature overall: 37 x 44-1/2 in. Abel Warshawsky was an American Impressionist who spent thirty successful years as an artist in France painting street scenes of Paris and remarkably insightful portraits. Though his busy cityscapes were often strongly influenced by French Impressionism, his portraits showed his skill at the realistic depiction of his subjects. He was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, in 1883, and was raised in Cleveland where he was taught the fundamentals of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism by Frederick Carl Gottwald at the local Art Institute. He continued his studies in New York at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design, advancing his skills and gaining experience with occasional assistance and criticism from notable American artist Winslow Homer. Leaving for France in 1908, Warshawsky traveled back and forth to the United States and maintained a studio in France for three decades. His artworks were admired in France and he enjoyed tremendous success there. He was honored when he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and a member of the French Society of Intellectuals. His fascinating book, “The Memories of an American Impressionist”, detailing his life as an American expatriate in Paris, was published many years after his death.

Abel George Warshawsky (American, 1883-1962) View of Uzerche, France, circa 1933 Oil on canvas 31-3/4 x 25-3/4 inches (80.6 x 65.4 cm) Signed upper right: A. G. Warshawsky PROVENANCE: Private collection, acquired 2013. LITERATURE: L. G. Balsam, Abel G. Warshawsky. Master-Painter, Humanist, Carmel, California, 1954, related work illustrated ( Dark River, Uzerche, France, 1933). A copy of the book Abel G. Warshawsky. Master-Painter, Humanist, signed by the artist and inscribed 'To Merle Murphy, with all my good wishes, Sincerely A.G. Warshawsky' accompanies this lot. Impressionist Abel Warshawsky spent most of his life in France, where he sought out landscape subjects which often have the effect of looking through layers of time. As an artist he was drawn to paint contemporary scenes in provincial villages which retain ancient architectural structures that carve into the exquisite natural landscape. During the early 1930s, Warshawsky seized upon the subject of the medieval hill town of Uzerche, picturesquely situated above a deeply incised meander of the Vézère River in southwest-central France (40 miles south of the porcelain-making town of Limoges, east of Bordeaux and west of Clermont-Ferrand). As such Uzerche is a natural citadel. The construction of the gardens along the Vézère, supported by little walls, are as noteworthy as the town's unique position and particular architectural features. As the rocky ground originally made it unsuitable for agriculture, the view of the lower part of the town is dominated by flowers, orchards and vegetable gardens. The town's roots go back to the earliest recorded history of the country, and its spectacular location is part of that history. Gaulish tribes settled in Uzerche as early as the 2nd century BCE, and Julius Caesar's Roman legions were there in 51 BCE, reputedly the last place they conquered in their march deep into the heart of France. Uzerche benefitted for centuries from being at the crossroads of two major trading routes. French and English kings as well as popes visited regularly and recognized the strategic value of such an easily defended site stated along a major tributary of the Dordogne River. The secular leaders established royal courts, tax bureaus, and other administrative offices at Uzerche, and during the medieval period the town was so wealthy that a popular saying held that "he who has a house in Uzerche has a capital in Limousin [the rural region where Uzerche is located]." With few exceptions, most of the structures in Uzerche's upper town date from the richest period of its history (1300-1700). The town is crowned at its highest point by the Romanesque Abbey Church of Saint Peter, where construction began in 1030 AD. The abbey had an important role in the military defense of the city, for during the 13th and 14th centuries towers were added (as important lookout points) and walls were fortified. Interestingly, in designing the present work, Warshawsky painted the lower town rather than the more storied upper town capped by the Abbey. The major element of masonry he recorded was the 19th-century viaduct (completed in 1902 and closed in 1969) which carried a railway into town. Its repetitive round arches establish a critical decorative element in the composition. In designing this painting, the artist drew upon important conventions he had absorbed from the French Impressionists during the first decade of the century, when he had first come to study in France. Notably, he composed his painting with an extremely high horizon line (the viaduct), a device taken ultimately from the Impressionists' study of Japanese prints. By placing the horizon line near the very top of the picture, Warshawsky allowed the design to seem to unfurl from that spot, like a scroll, serving to flatten the space. The sensation

Abel George Warshawsky (American, 1883-1962) Toward San Giorgio, Venice, circa 1909 Oil on canvas 25 x 32 inches (63.5 x 81.3 cm) Signed lower right: A. G. Warshawsky Property from the Wainwright Collection of American Modernism PROVENANCE: Tregoning & Company, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, August 1999; Private collection, Fort Myers, Florida, acquired from the above. This lovely and freshly painted Venetian view across the Canale di San Marco captures the delight Abel Warshawsky experienced painting La  Serenissima for the very first time in his career. In 1909, he traveled together with his American compatriot, painter Samuel Halpert, and recorded his vivid first experiences of the floating city in journals, which fortuitously made their way into a lively memoir, The Memories of an American Impressionist, published posthumously. (Kent State University Press, 1980) Warshawsky's record chronicles a wealth of colorful episodes describing how he and Halpert worked from life in Venice, who they encountered, what they saw, what they ate and drank, and even how this particular painting came into being. During their 1909 tour of Italy, Warshawsky and Halpert befriended the painter Ivan Olinsky, who for years had worked with John LaFarge, America's foremost mural decorator. They met in Rome where Olitsky, who had worked throughout the previous winter in Venice, was, as Warshawsky put it, "full of enthusiasm for the city of St. Mark's." ( Memories, p. 74) He urged the pair to visit Venice next, and even went ahead of them to secure a place for them to stay along a small canal, not far from the church of Santa Maria della Salute. Their proximity to the Salute resulted in an artistic "star sighting" when one morning Warshawsky spotted, not far from his Venetian apartment, "an elderly, bearded gentleman painting a small canvas of one of the doors of the Salute. He was working in a very slow and precise manner. It was a striking study. When viewed from nearby, it looked as though it had been painted in a very loose and careless manner, but at the distance of six feet, it took on remarkable strength and reality. I found him working on that study two subsequent mornings and learned he was John Singer Sargent." ( Memories, p. 82) The pair spent three weeks in Venice, and found the city "a paradise for sketching"—averaging two sketches a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Warshawsky reminisced, "The narrow canals with their quaint old buildings reflected in the water, the dark mass of a gondola stealing through and giving motion to the scene, were tempting opportunities for the painter to be seized at every turn. Peeling plaster on the old walls, with the red bricks shining beneath and the mouldy green tints near the water's edge, the parti-colored mooring poles for gondolas—all these motifs, though they have been painted innumerable times, were still a tempting lure for our brushes." ( Memories, p. 81) The occasion of Ivan Olitsky's birthday provided the circumstances which gave rise to the present work. Warshawky recalled, "[Olitsky] invited us to lunch to celebrate... We lunched, if not wisely, very well and liquidly, with the result that we floated rather than walked, from the table. Despite the festive occasion, it was decided not to waste the afternoon, so we sat down and sketched. My subject was a view of San Giorgio with boats in the foreground. Everything appeared topsy-turvy and the colors were blurred. The boys swore it was a masterpiece of its kind. But I wondered what their verdict would be when the effects of our potations had worn off. We ended that afternoon with a fine nap in the shade. Whenever I look at that wine-inspired canvas—for it still figures among the souvenirs of my Italian journey—I must modestly confess that it would have held it

LITERATURE: H. Adams, Cleveland Artists Foundation, Painting in Pure Color. Modern Art in Cleveland before the Armory Show 1908-1913, exhibition catalogue, Cleveland, Ohio, 2013, pp. 46-47, 116, fig. 41, no. 24, illustrated. A painting by Abe Warshawsky was the very first work of art the Wainwrights purchased for their collection of Cleveland School Modernism. Warshawsky was a perfect starting point since he was first Cleveland artist to discover the use of intense color in France, and also the first to bring it home to Cleveland in an array of landscapes and portraits that shocked, appalled and absolutely delighted the city's artists and patrons. His November 1910 exhibition at the Rorimer Galleries became a cause célèbre. There was no going back to the 19th-century model of painting with "brown sauce." The vivid impressionistic manner had arrived, and set off what Henry Adams called "a series of chain reactions that led the group [of Cleveland artists] towards progressively more daring forms of modern art." (Henry Adams , Painting in Pure Color, exhibition catalogue, Cleveland Artists Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, 2013, p. 33) Interesting, while he started the Modernist fire, Warshawsky did not dive into its increasingly radical forms such as Fauvism or Cubism along with other Clevelanders. He continued in the Impressionist mode for the rest of his career, creating a body of many stunningly beautiful works, including the present scene, Boats on the Seine, composed of complimentary greens and soothing lavender blues. He spent most of his career in France, returning periodically to sell his paintings to American collectors. Once they began collecting Warshawsky the Wainwrights kept an eye out for other prime examples of his vivid canvases. They spotted Boats on the Seine in an exhibit at the Cleveland Artists Foundation in 2010, noticing it had been on loan from a gallery. They quickly tracked it down and three years later loaned it from their own collection to the exhibition "Painting in Pure Color" where is was displayed in a different context in the same gallery. Warshawsky painted this view of candy-colored barges moored on a curve of the Seine in the heart of Paris sometime in the summer of 1911, a few months following his return to Paris from his ground-breaking Cleveland exhibition. The trees on the far bank of the Seine are still green and lush and hadn't yet started to turn. During this period, Warshawsky was sharing a Paris apartment with William Zorach, another Cleveland Modernist painter. The two painted together during the summer months and, in fact, painted very similar scenes along the Seine, though Warshawsky's work shows a brighter palette and a more sophisticated grasp of color principles. Warshawsky was generous about sharing his practical theories of color application, and Zorach both learned from them and made a record of them: "The new technique was based upon the juxtaposition of the primary colors in the spectrum. Sunlight was warm, yellows, red and oranges; shadows were cold, made up of greens, blues, and purples, with a sp
