WT0203219 PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs, Northern Territory Private collection, Tasmania Joel Fine Art, Melbourne, 3 June 2008, lot 53 (label attached verso) Private collection, Sydney This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Papunya Tula Artists which states: 'This painting depicts designs associated with the swamp and rockhole site of Marawa, to the west of Lake Mackay. The roundels represent soakage waters at the site and the squares are hills and mulga trees. In mythological times the Dingo Dreaming travelled from this site to Nyunmanu, south-east of the Kintore Community. This mythology forms part of the Tingari Cycle. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a secret nature no further detail was given. Generally, the Tingari are a group of mythical characters of the Dreaming who travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites. The Tingari Men were usually followed by Tingari Women and accompanied by novices and their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles. These mythologies form part of the teachings of the post initiatory youths today as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs.' © Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri/Copyright Agency 2023 This work is located in our Melbourne Gallery This work is in excellent, stable and original condition. Warlimpirrnga had been living west of Lake Mackay before his small family group walked into the Pintupi community of Kiwirrkurra, where their relatives lived, in 1984. Prior to that, he'd had no contact with European Australians, though he was aware of their presence. His Pintupi relatives had almost all been brought out of the Gibson Desert decades earlier by the infamous 'Pintupi Patrols', forcing them to settle in Haasts and Papunya. He commenced painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1987. The following year, he had his first solo exhibition at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi in Melbourne. In 2016, his works featured in a solo exhibition at the renowned Studio 94 Gallery in New York. Like many other Western Desert paintings, the work is a topographical aerial view of ancestral lands. The Tingari beings arrived at this site west of Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay) from the west, travelling beneath the earth's surface to create the ridges and windswept sandhills that unfold, pulsating and radiating across the canvas. Waves of sand ridges and dunes are depicted by constructing a matrix of parallel meandering and zigzagging lines. These are the same as those incised into traditional ceremonial objects, including hair pins, boomerangs, and shields made by senior artisans amongst desert peoples.

These are the same as those incised into traditional ceremonial objects, including hair pins, boomerangs, and shields made by senior artisans amongst desert peoples.

Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri - Wanampi Dreaming at Wikinkarra, 1996

          Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Warlimpirrnga had been living west of Lake Mackay before his small family group walked into the Pintupi community of Kiwirrkurra, where their relatives lived, in 1984. Prior to that, they had had no contact with European Australians, though they were aware of their presence. His Pintupi relatives had almost all been brought out of the Gibson Desert decades earlier by the infamous 'Pintupi Patrols', forcing them to settle in Haasts Bluff and Papunya. They later returned to outstations closer to their homelands after the establishment of Kintore and Kiwirrkurra in the far reaches of the Western Desert. Warlimpirrnga commenced painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1987. The following year, he had his first solo exhibition at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi in Melbourne. In this atypical work he depicts the Wanampi (Snake) Dreaming at the site of Wikinkarra (Lake Mackay). There is a rockhole situated in the centre of the lake where the snake lives. The snake ancestors travelled underground from Lake Mackay to Watanuma, Pinari and finally south-east to Ayers Rock (Uluru). The roundels depict the various sites the snakes visited on their journey to the west.

Warlimpirrnga had been living west of Lake Mackay before his small family group walked into the Pintupi community of Kiwirrkurra, where their relatives lived, in 1984. Prior to that, they had had no contact with European Australians, though they were aware of their presence. He commenced painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1987. The following year, he had his first solo exhibition at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi in Melbourne. This painting depicts designs associated with the Tingari site of Wilkinkarra (lake Mackay). A group of Tingari women rested here before continuing their journey to Munga Munga. The Tingari Cycle is a secret song cycle sacred to initiated men and women. The Tingari are Dreamtime beings who travelled across the landscape performing ceremonies to create and shape the country. They gathered at these sites for Maliera (initiation) ceremonies. The sites take the form of, and are located at, significant rockholes, sand hills, sacred mountains and water soakages in the Western Desert. Tingari may be poetically interpreted as song-line paintings relating to the songs of the people and creation stories of places in Pintupi mythology.

WT0410052 DIMENSIONS: 182.0 x 242.0 cm PROVENANCE: Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs, Northern Territory Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi, Melbourne (label attached verso) Private collection, Sydney, acquired from the above in April 2005 ESSAY: When Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri arrived in the settlement at Kiwirrkura (a remote community near the Pollock Hills in Western Australia) in 1984, having led his small family group out of the desert for the last time, he not only made international headlines as one of “the last uncontacted nomadic tribesmen of the world”, but was subsequently catapulted into a vastly different way of life. His Pintupi relatives had almost all been brought out of the Gibson Desert decades earlier by the infamous ‘Pintubi Patrols’, settling in Ikuntji and Papunya. The extended time Warlimpirrnga spent living a traditional way of life on remote lands west of Lake MacKay and his precocious attainment of the role of maparntjarra (healer) commanded instant respect amongst his relatives in Kiwirrkura and further afield. Notwithstanding these auspicious beginnings, Warlimpirrnga’s experience in joining the community and seeking out art materials to paint his tjukurrpa, were no different to that of his relatives Freddy West Tjakamarra or Yanyatjarri Tjakamarra, who some decades earlier had introduced the men’s stories of the Tingari to Western art audiences.1 Marawa, 2004, is a distinctive dichromatic painting of interlocking Tingari designs carefully mapped out in Warlimpirrnga’s subtly individual fine, shimmering meandering lines and stippled dots on an ochre and black ground. Pintupi men had a profound influence on the emergence of Western Desert art in Papunya from the early 1970s, with artists such as Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Uta Uta Tjangala and Antatjari Tjakamarra presenting their sacred stories of Tingari creation of the natural landscape and advocating for their people’s return to country (leading to the establishment of Kintore and Kiwirrkura). These songlines were gradually adapted from and reflected the potency of ritual sand drawings and incised objects. On the most literal level of interpretation, Marawa, like many other Western Desert paintings, is a “map”, a topographical aerial view of ancestral lands combined with a codified mnemonic system of symbols conveying the tjukurrpa and ceremonies associated with this site west of Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay). This tight and well-resolved composition is a painting referring this site of rockhole and soakage water from which Warlimpirrnga came, a vast land that he continues to roam to this day. Oral histories speak of the Tingari beings arriving at this site from the west, travelling beneath the earth’s surface to create the ridges and windswept sandhills that unfold across the canvas, pulsating and radiating beyond the physical limits of the rectilinear canvas. While Warlimpirrnga’s abstraction, similar to that of George Tjungurrayi, undoubtedly creates a range of rich optical effects, reminiscent of Western Modernist artworks, the cosmological power of his artworks surpasses their aesthetic and formal qualities. The partial revelation of certain elements of the artist’s tjukurrpa, keeping most hidden from the uninitiated, quietly commands recognition and respect of the persistence and beauty of aboriginal culture, the world’s oldest continual line, and the law that underpins it. Warlimpirrnga’s skill and confidence as a painter has led to global recognition of his work and its stories, with his paintings held in prestigious public collections and exhibited internationally alongside the best examples of contemporary art.
