    Garawan Wanambi - Marrangu - Larrikitj, 2011

    Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Garawan Wanambi lives and works at Gängan, south of Yirrkala in north East Arnhem Land. He is renowned for bark paintings and sculptures that feature precise geometry and complex layering of designs, creating mesmerising optical effects through an impression of depth on an otherwise flattened surface. In doing this, he explores the Yolŋu concept of Buwayak ‒ simultaneously making elements both visible and invisible. Garawan's father was Mnuparriwuy Wanambi (1920-1973) one of the artists of the Yirrkala Church panels . After his father’s death, Garawan was guided by Yanggariny Wunungmurra and through this connection paints Marrangu, the counterpart of Marrakulu, from the other side of Arnhem Bay.
