WALTON, Elijah (illustratore; 1832-1880) - Thomas George BONNEY (1833-1923) - The Peaks and Valleys of the Alps. London: Sampson Low, Son, and Marston, 1868. A splendid work containing 21 chromolithographic plates with delicate pastel colours that perfectly translate the watercolours of Alpine subjects by Elijah Walton, renown for his interpretation of Alpine and Nordic landscapes which often appear as if transfigured by a mystical-dreamlike beauty typical of the artist. Among the most significant views are those of the Western Alps, including the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Monviso, the Aosta Valley, the Dent Du Midi and the Grivola. Walton was commissioned by William Matthews, founder of the Alpine Club, to capture a series of views of the Alps, a project which would occupy him for the next 5 years. The text was instead provided by the geologist T. G. Bonney, who would become president of the Alpine Club in 1881. Second printing, "reissue", of the first edition of 1867, both very difficult to find on the market. Folio (560 x 362mm). Additional lithographic title, 21 chromolithograph plates by J.H. Lowes after Elijah Walton, each mounted as issued with a printed caption and descriptive text (light soiling and occasional foxing, heavier in the margins, a little offsetting). Contemporary half calf over editorial cloth boards titled in gilt (rubbed and scuffed). IT WALTON, Elijah (illustratore; 1832-1880) - Thomas George BONNEY (1833-1923) - The Peaks and Valleys of the Alps. Londra: Sampson Low, Son, and Marston, 1868.
