Gordon Walters Geneology III 1971, printed 2020 screenprint on paper, edition of 100 indented with Walters Estate chop mark 1055 x 805mm Gordon Walters (1919-1995) is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most significant artists. He is revered for his fusion of European Modernism and indigenous Māori motifs. From the 1950s onwards, Walters experimented widely with Māori and Pacific symbols. This led to his synthesis of the hard-edged painting style of modernist abstraction utlising the organic form of the koru pattern, for which he became well known. The artist described his paintings as an attempt to make sense of the environment in which he lived. Genealogy III and Tahi are prime examples of his signature stylised koru achieved through extreme reduction and repetition. In these prints, Walters uses positive and negative relationships to suggest the rhythmic form of a koru. Derived from kowhaiwhai patterns, the koru refers to the endless cycle of birth, death and renewal in te ao Māori. Genealogy III divides the composition into thirds: the koru pattern appears to cascade down the surface, decreasing in size in the lower two-thirds of the picture plane. In this manner, the work suggests the idea of lineage of whakapapa inherent in the title. Walter’s Genealogy series is considered one of his greatest achievements. Similarly, Tahi explores the formal and symbolic registers of the word. Meaning both ‘one’ and ‘in unison’, Tahi uses a limited palette of yellow and black to create an elegant yet powerful drama across the art work’s surface. The works strike a keen balance between geometric purity and optically charged movement.

    Gordon Walters 1919-1995-Airborne c. 1955 Gouache

    Est: $22,000 - $28,000

Gordon Walters 1919-1995-Airborne c. 1955 Gouache on paper 22.0x30.0 Signed & inscribed PROVENANCE Private Collection, New York In 1950, Gordon Walters travelled to Europe, eventually basing himself in London It was during this time that he viewed works by leading European artists such as Capogrossi, Taeuber-Arp, Vasarley and Herbin He also had the opportunity to see exhibitions of American art, as well as works by Mondrian and artists of the Bauhaus The collective works of these artists had a considerable effect on Walters and were formative to his stylistic development On his return to New Zealand in 1953, Walters began to produce his first abstract works, mainly on paper, completely devoid of figurative representation He remained very aware of developments in international art through magazine publications such as Art d'Aujourd Hui, while continuing to apply modernist principles to his work Walters was responsible for paving the way for Modernism in this country During the 1950s, the majori y of artists were concentrating largely on painting nationalist landscapes It was not until the 1970s that many of his works from the 1950s were finally shown to the public As discussed by Walters; They were not shown at the time I did them because I considered the climate to be unsympathetic, if not downright hostile to abstraction Gordon Walters quote p 31 Parallel Lines: Gordon Walters in context, William McAloon, Auckland City Art Gallery 1994 When viewed in this context, its apparent that Airborne was extremely progressive for its time It was completed just prior to the first of Walter's Koru Paintings from 1956 We begin to see Walters working within a defined set of formal aspects, those being colour, shape and composition, in order to achieve a visually harmonious balance The reduced palette is typical of his gouaches, while simple geometric forms are restricted mainly to variations of the square, circle and rectangle

    Est: $35,000 - $45,000

Gordon Walters 1919-1995-Study for Black on White, 1965 India ink on paper 61.5x46.0 PROVENANCE Sir Graeme & Lady Florence Davies collection, London Purchased from New Vision Gallery, Auckland 1973 Wellington born Gordon Walters was a pioneer of modernist abstraction in New Zealand This painter showed an unflinching commitment to abstraction at a time when landscape was the norm Walters is best known for his Koru works, whose unique stylisation of the Maori koru motif developed out of a phase of experimentation in the 1950s The geometric spiral form of the koru began appearing consistently in Walters' work from the late 1950s My work is an investigation of positive/ negative relationships within a deliberately limited range of forms; the forms I use have no descriptive value in themselves and are used solely to demonstrate relations I believe that dynamic relations are most clearly expressed by the repetition of a few simple elements GORDON WALTERS
