†CARL WALTERS (AMERICAN, 1883-1955), ART POTTERY MONKEY, DATED 1928

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

CARL WALTERS (AMERICAN, 1883-1955), ART POTTERY MONKEY, DATED 1928 Carl Walters was born in Iowa and as a young man worked as a tinsmith and a brass patternmaker. He took figure drawing classes at the Minneapolis Art Institute from 1905-1907 and moved to New York the following year to study at the William Merritt Chase School with Robert Henri. In 1912, he married and moved to Portland, Oregon, where he exhibited paintings of circus animals and seascapes. Two of his marine subjects were sent to the 1917 Salon of Independent Artists in New York. Walters moved to New York City in 1918 and became fascinated with ceramics after seeing a display of ancient turquoise glazed faience beads at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He developed a passion for ceramics and spent several years developing his own alkaline glaze, which became his trademark "Walters Blue". He was completely self-taught and one of the first Americans to exhibit finished pieces in clay. In 1922, he joined an artist community at Woodstock, NY, and had a kiln and a studio. It was there that his modernist figurative ceramics established his reputation as a sculptor. He had his first show at the Whitney Studio Club in 1924. When this became the Whitney Museum of Art, he was commissioned to make its entrance doors, which included molded glass panels decorated with animals and circus scenes. In 1927, Walters's first one-man show of sculpture was held at the Dudensing Gallery in New York. The following year his sculptures were included in the International Exhibition of Ceramic Art, organized by the American Federation of the Arts. The exhibition toured eight city museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was invited to exhibit regularly at the Whitney's annuals and biennials from 1929-1945, as well as the Art Institute of Chicago from 1932-1945. His colorful and amusing animals and figures were purchased by clients such as the Rockefellers and Eleanor Roosevelt. During his lifetime, his work was collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Newark Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art. - h:9 in.
