      Elizabeth Morse Walsh (Lowell, MA 1886-1983): Portrait oil on canvas (probably of Mrs. Franklin Nourse, wife of the Engineer, whose calling card with the address 53 Mansur St. Lowell, MA was attached to the stretcher). Age related wear. Height 10 inches (25.5 cm.) X width 8 inches (20.3 cm.).OBITUARY: Elizabeth Morse Walsh, studied at the Museum of Fine Arts School under Frank Weston Benson, Edmund Charles Tarbell, William McGregor Paxton and Philip Leslie Hale. In 1916, won the Paige Traveling Scholarship, a $2,400 prize and two years of art studies in Europe. Put off until World War I ended. Meanwhile, her work was exhibited throughout the U S, including a 1918 solo show at the Whistler House in Lowell. In 1922, Walsh headed to Europe, studying in Paris for two years with Louis Biloul. Upon her return to America, Walsh's work was exhibited at the MFA and Whistler House Museum. She worked for Reader's Digest, Filene's Department Store and dabbled in acting. She became a first-time bride at 64, marrying construction engineer Sidney Hewes Hunking in 1950. Walsh painted into her 90s, producing more than 150 portraits, many of them prominent personalities of Greater Lowell, including U.S. Rep. Edith Nourse Rogers. She also wrote three books in the last 10 years of her life, including a commentary on James McNeill Whistler's work. She died in 1983 at the age of 97.

      Walsh 1943" u.l. Oil on canvas, 35 x 23 3/4 in. (88.8 x 60.4 cm), unframed. Condition: Puncture u.c., scattered retouch, varnish inconsistencies. N.B. Predominately a portrait painter, Walsh painted over 150 such works during her almost seventy-five year career. Walsh's work was recently included in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, exhibition A Studio of Her Own, Fall 2001.
