ARTIST: OTTE WALLISH (1903-1977) SIZE: 24 3/4 x 36 1/4 in./63 x 92.2 cm PRINTER: Gilboa, Tel Aviv DESCRIPTION: Wallish promotes the initiatives of the Zel Korati company—"the first Palestine savings and building corporation"—in this graphic composition. The photomontage, shot by Yitzhak Kalter, depicts various buildings in Palestinian cities. The Hebrew inscription reads: "We have distributed 60,000 Palestinian pounds as building loans. 40,000 have received interim credit. 200 families have acquired homes." Wallish was born in Moravia and immigrated to pre-state Israel in 1934, where he became integral to the developing Zionist movement. He designed posters as a commercial advertising agent and as a Zionist propagandist, and also designed the logos of the Israel Police and the Israel Defense Forces. OTTE WALLISH (1903-1977) [SEND YOUR NEW YEAR GREETINGS EARLIER]. 1952. 18 1/2x13 inches, 47x33 cm. [Government Printer.] Condition A. Wallish was a Jewish Czech graphic designer, who studied at the Vienna Art Academy, and later opened his own design firm in Prague. He originally used the German spelling of his name, Wallisch, but after moving to Israel, adopted the English transliteration of his name in Hebrew - "Wallish." He was responsible for the calligraphy and design of the scroll for Israel's Declaration of Independence, based on the calligraphy style from a 16th century Torah scroll. Wallish also had his hand in designs for Israeli stamps, coins, banknotes and medallions, as well as many posters.

"A Nation Reborn on its Ancestral Soil", a poster issued by JNF. No printer, designer, or year indicated. [New York, ca. 1940s]. [Design: Otte Wallish]. An Illustrated poster issued by the Jewish National Fund in the United States. The illustration depicts a pioneer holding a hoe and rolling up his sleeve, a Tower-and-Stockade settlement and a tractor plowing a field in the background. The caption "A Nation Reborn on its Soil" is printed at the upper part of the poster and the caption "Jewish National Fund, 111 Fifth Avenue N.Y." is printed at the bottom. In the catalogue "Otte Wallish: The Face of Land and Nation" (an exhibition catalogue of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, 2015, p. 58), appears a poster, dated 1939, with an identical illustration and the Hebrew caption "Jewish National Fund." 55X84.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Creases and a small number of stains. Tears (some open) mostly in the margins, restored. Linen-backed for display and preservation.
