      BENJAMIN A. WALLACE (1770-1850) "PORTRAIT OF WOMAN AND CHILD". American (New York, NY), dated 1824. Charming oil on canvas portrait of a seated mother and baby, framed by tasseled red curtains (characteristic of Wallace's work). Both wearing bonnets, the baby is holding a rattle. Having been presumedly transcribed from the original canvas to the newer lining, the reverse reads in script, "B.A. Wallace, Pinst, Dec. 1824" [sic]. Stretcher, 31"h. 26.5"w. Cleaned down cove-molded frame with black and a gilt liner, 39.5"h. 34.25"w. For another portrait by Wallace, see Garth's Auctions (Ohio), 11/23/12, lot 327.

      PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN BY BENJAMIN A. WALLACE (AMERICAN, 1770-1850). Oil on canvas, signed on reverse, 1820-1835. Said to be "Mrs. Charles Crommelin, Sr." Seated woman with elaborate cap and ruffled lace collar, draped in paisley shawl and holding book. Restoration. 40"h. 28"w., in a frame, 45.5"h. 32"w. Probably Ann Cogswell Crommelin who married Charles Crommelin in 1795 and resided in the New York City area where Wallace was known to be painting portraits and miniatures.
