William Guy Wall, Original Watercolor Hudson River circa 1820's

        Est: $500 - $2,500

William Guy Wall, Hudson River "View Near Fort Miller #10". Original Watercolor on Paper William Guy Wall (Irish/American, 1792 -1864). Hudson River 'View near Fort Miller, #10'. Original watercolor on paper by Irish-born artist W.G. Hall, for the Hudson River Portfolio, published between 1821 - 1825 by Henry J. Megarey, publisher, new york city. Unsigned. To create this project, Wall spent the summer of 1820 traversing 212 miles of the hudson rivers 315- mile course, painting various views in watercolor. From this expedition twenty plates were engraved as aquatints by master engraver John Hill (British/American, 1770-1850). This particular watercolor was to be assigned as plate #10, but was revised to #9 upon publication. Prints of equal scale were proposed, to be issued to subscribers in sets of four, with John Rubens Smith hired to work the plates originally. Almost immediately, Smith was replaced by the skilled London-trained aquatint engraver John Hill, who finished the first four plates, and produced sixteen more by 1825. Over the next decade, the popularity of the portfolio stimulated new appreciation for american landscape, and prepared the way for the hudson river school of artists . Fort Miller was a famous revolutionary war site in New York. The hamlet of Fort Miller is named for the fort built on the west side of the Hudson River by the British during the French and Indian War. Known as the 'Little Carrying Place,' Fort Miller was not much more than a protected storehouse strategically located between Saratoga and Fort Edward. Here a waterfall impeded river traffic, forcing travelers to carry their boat and supplies around the falls by land. The fort was in ruins by the summer of 1777, but a settlement had taken its name on the opposite side of the river.  This watercolor depicts the area in 1820.

Portfolio, Hudson River, No 5, Wm. G. Wall

        Est: $50 - $100

Title: Hadley's Falls Artist: William G. Wall Publisher: H.L. Megarey & W.B. Gilley Engraver: I.B. Smith & J. Hill Description: This painting shows the immensity of Hadley's Falls, using two men hiking in the bottom left corner to give a scale. There is a darkened feeling to this painting, with the primary colors blue and gray, with small hints of green and brown - next to no colors that could be considered warm. The muted colors of the painting gives a sense of dullness, which fits with the likely deafening noise of the falls muting out all other noise. Date: C.1825 Frame: Paper Framed Size: 21.75x27.5" Work Size: 18.75x25.25" Weight: 0.8lbs Condition: Foxing, laid down, some staining. Provenance: New York Estate History: Wall was born in Dublin in 1792. Early in life he went to America, arriving in New York in September, 1818. He painted there with some success for many years, and was one of the original members of the National Academy of Design, established in New York in 1826. Amongst his earliest works was a series of Views of the Hudson River, which was engraved in aquatint by J. Smith and J. Hill, and published about 1820 by I. Megarey in New York as the "Hudson River Portfolio." This work, one of the most important series of early American views, was issued in three parts, each part containing twelve views, 14 ½ by 21 ½ inches. It was on the Hudson River that Fulton established his line of steamers about the time the views were painted, and two of the views contain representations of steam-boats, one of a very primitive type. About 1832 Wall returned to Dublin and became associated with "Master Hubard," the infant prodigy in "scissor-work," who was touring Ireland with his exhibition of paper-cut silhouettes. This appears from a contemporary handbill: "Facing the George Hotel, Galway. Entrance, 376 High Street. The Papyrolamia of the celebrated Master Hubard. . . . . .Collection of accurate Delineations of Flowers, Trees, Perspective Views, Architectural, Military and Sporting Pieces, Family Groups, Portraits of Distinguished Individuals, &c. Elegantly Mounted Pictures and Backgrounds, by W. G. Wall, Esqre., of Dublin, together with 7 grand Oriental Paintings of the most celebrated views of North America, taken on the spot by eminent British Artists. Admission is. . . . ." (see "The History of Silhouettes," by E. Nevill Jackson, 1911).In 1840 Wall sent three American views and one of "Blarney Castle" to the Royal Hibernian Academy, and also an American view in 1842. In 1843 he exhibited pictures of American scenery at the Society of Irish Artists, of which he was a member, and many of his works were purchased by the Royal Irish Art Union and given as prizes to subscribers between 1843 and 1846. In 1851, he again contributed to the Royal Hibernian Academy, among his exhibits being a water-colour "View of Lough Mask," and one of "The Castle, Athenry." In 1853 he made his only appearance at the Royal Academy with "A Mountain Stream in Connemara." Wall produced some clever work in water-colour as well as in oil, but did not succeed in obtaining much encouragement in Dublin; and, depressed by the neglect he suffered, he returned to America in, or soon after, 1856. For some time, though advanced in years, he attempted to follow his profession at Newburgh, N. Y. State; but in 1862 he appears to have returned to Dublin and no further information is obtainable about him. A "View of Ulverston," by him, belongs to James T. Andrews, 1 Waterloo Road, Dublin.Wall married in 1812, before he left Ireland, and had, besides two daughters, a son, born in New York in 1828, who was also an artist and contributed a landscape to the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1847 and again in 1853. He was in London in 1857 and 1858, and exhibited landscapes in those years in the Royal Academy, and in 1857 and 1859 in the British Institution. In 1861 he exhibited at the National Academy in New York. In 1865, 1870 and 1872 he again contributed to the Royal Academy, and was then living in, or near, London. His name last occurs in 1875, when he was residing at Norbiton.

William Guy Wall (1792-1864) A View on the Boyne

        Est: €5,000 - €7,000

William Guy Wall (1792-1864) A View on the Boyne Oil on canvas, 72 x 92cm (28.3 x 36.25'') Signed and inscribed with title on artist's label verso Born in Dublin, Wall emigrated to America in 1818 where he established himself as a painter of some note. An original member of The National Academy of Design he became most closely associated with the Hudson River School of painting. In 1832 he returned to Dublin where both his Irish and American landscapes were initially well received but by the 1850's he was forced to return to America in search of commissions and latterly he moved to London where he died in 1875. In View on the Boyne Wall brings to bear an eye for the dramatic and sublime so redolent of The Hudson River School. The sheets of rain falling along the coast south of Drogheda sit in marked contrast to the considerably brighter foreground of the Curly Hole above the river Boyne with a workman seated by his spade conversing with a woman standing by her donkey. In the far distance the spire of Drogheda's St Peter's Church has been picked out by the artist and locates the town without imposing any sense of the urban upon the composition

William Guy Wall (1792-1864) SCENE IN THE GLEN OF THE DOWNS, 1848 original exhibition label on reverse oil on canvas 52 by 81cm., 20.5 by 32in. William Guy Wall was born and educated in Dublin, but moved to America in 1818. There he achieved recognition for his series of watercolour landscapes which were published in aquatint form as the Hudson River Portfolio (c.1820), and which were later used as transfer printed designs for Stevenson's Cobridge pottery works in Staffordshire, England. In 1826 Wall helped found the National Academy of Design in New York, from where he exhibited, whilst also showing at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He returned to Ireland around 1832 and began exhibiting at the RHA in 1840. In 1843 Wall was one of the nine founding members of the Society of Irish Artists (along with Edward Hayes, Michael Angelo Hayes, and the Brocas family). However, a perceived neglect of his work led Wall to return to America in 1856 for a period of four years. He finally returned to Dublin in 1860 where he died in relative obscurity. His work hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and in the collection of the New York Historical Society. Strickland records that many of Walls paintings were purchased by the Royal Irish Art Union and given as prizes to subscribers during the years 1843-46 (vol. II, p. 499). However, Wall's association the National Art Union was hitherto unrecorded. The National Art Union was founded in 1846 with the object of encouraging Irish artists. According to Strickland, 'it began with great promise, but, owing chiefly to want of funds, had only a brief existence, and came to an end in 1851' (vol. II, p. 663).
