BIOGRAPHY: Bernhardt Wall (December 29, 1872 - February 9, 1956) was an American etcher, illustrator, commercial artist, lithographer, craftsman, teacher, and historian. He designed more than 5,000 postcards for various companies, earning him the epithet "Postcard King." Wall also established himself as an etcher of famous American political and cultural leaders, particularly Abraham Lincoln.Wall was born in Buffalo, New York, to German immigrant parents. He showed an aptitude for art starting at an early age and became a student of James Francis Brown, Henry Reuterdahl, and William Auerbach-Levy.He attended Buffalo public schools and after briefly studying at the Art Students League in Buffalo, he worked as a lithographer starting in 1889. He also worked as a watchmaker and photographer. In August of 1893, Wall took a tour of the western U.S. He arrived by train in San Antonio that winter and quickly wove himself in the art scene by teaching, co-owning the San Antonio Engraving Company, and organizing the San Antonio Art League, where he also served as president. His time in San Antonio signaled a long affiliation and love of the state. He met Jennie Hunter (later his wife) while making sketches in Fort Gibson, Texas, and the couple moved to Houston for a brief period. There Wall served as art editor of The Gulf Messenger, a women's literary journal published in Houston, all the while creating sketches of historic sites and portraits of famous people.Wall returned to New York, where he enlisted in the 202nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Spain-American War. While in Cuba aboard the Minnewaska, he sketched the Maine before the ship sank in the Havana Harbor. Following the war, he worked in New York as a commercial artist, producing an array of colored postcards, many of them comical.In 1924 Wall and his wife moved to New Preston, Connecticut, and by 1929, they had started wintering in La Porte, Texas. Wall subsequently published three books related to the area in the mid 1930s, including Following General Sam Houston, 1793-1863, which features 60 etchings.The couple purchased a small house near Lime Rock, Connecticut, and Wall opened an etching studio there, which was across the street from Dard Hunter's paper mill. Between 1931-1942, Wall serially published Following Abraham Lincoln, an 85-volume set that illustrated Lincoln's life'each volume contains five original etchings. By the end of his career, Wall had published eight illustrated books and 523 etchings based on Lincoln.In addition to creating etchings for his books, he also wrote, designed, printed and bound them. He also designed many bookplates.After Jennie's unexpected death in 1938, Wall married Doris Turner, and the couple moved to Sierra Madre in 1944. His last etchings were made there. While in California, he was active in the Lincoln Fellowship of Southern California, and several issues of its annual publication feature a tipped-in etching of Lincoln. Biography from the Archives of askArt: Jose Guadalupe Posada was a prolific printmaker and illustrator, with a powerful body of work that belied the relatively quiet life he led. He was born to German Posada and Petra Aguilar, both poor and of peasant origin, in Aguascalientes, Mexico, in 1852. He began to show artistic promise at a very young age, copying religious cards or prints in bibles to help his brother Cirilo, a schoolteacher, with his youngest students. Though he attended a drawing academy directed by Antonio Varela, he did not stay long, instead preferring to teach himself what he could before working at the lithography shop of Trinidad Pedrozo. Here, he did illustrations for the newspaper El Jicote Ilustrado, earning his first recognition as an artist by the public. In 1873, Posada married Maria de Jesus Vela, and moved to Mexico City following a great flood that demolished much of Leon, where he made his living as an illustrator for a local newspaper. In Mexico City he continued his work for news publications; by 1890, he was working as a permanent staff member of the Antonio Vanegas Publishing House, a mutually rewarding partnership that lasted until his death. These broadsides and newspapers became a voice for the people, many of whom could not read or write, and explained the circumstances of political upheaval, local incidents, and everyday-people's stories in a single image. These works of art became known for their succinct and elegant portrayal of Mexican daily life and political happenings, and played a major part in the revival of the country's art. Posada is credited with greatly influencing budding artists Orozco and Rivera, both young students at the time. Despite his humble yet rebellious nature and the ever-increasing popularity of his work, Posada's financial success was limited. He never became wealthy, and he drank excessively; eventually he succumbed to enteritis, alone and impoverished, in January of 1913. After studying at the Buffalo Art League, Bernhardt Wall began a career in lithography in 1889. He soon became known as the "Postcard King" and designed over 5,000 comic cards. He served in the Spanish American War in Cuba. About 1915, he decided to make etching his vocation. He then had studios in NYC, Houston (TX), Lime Rock (CT), and Sierra Madre (CA). He died in Sawtelle, CA on Feb. 9, 1956. As an historian, he specialized in famous people and historical events. Approximately 145 full-page etched illustrations and portraits, all text leaves etched, in colored inks on colored paper. Original etched wrappers, housed in original folding paper and board protective cases with etched labels to spines and manuscript dates to front cover. Overall excellent condition with light creasing at spine folds of some wrappers, some wear to protective cases with loss of plastic tab in a few and chipping to a few spine labels of protective cases. NUMBER 20 OF 60 SUBSCRIBER'S COPIES, SIGNED BY WALL on the limitation page of each volume. A complete run of Wall's entirely etched miniature periodical, focusing on American historical figures and themes. "[T]he most famous miniature monthly magazine ever published" (Adomeit MBC 1:4).
