(b Stockton, California, 1969) Contemporary American Artist. In 1991, Walker received her BFA from the Atlanta College of Art and followed that with her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1994. Addressing issues of race, sexuality, and gender, Walker’s appropriation of the 18th and 19th-century practice of cutting paper portrait silhouettes, recreating narratives from the Antebellum South that re-define racial stereotypes and plantation mythologies.* In 2007, Walker received the John D. and Catherine T. Kara Walker, b. 1969, Resurrection Story Without Patrons

    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Kara Walker b. 1969 Resurrection Story Without Patrons 2017 etching with aquatint, sugar-lift, spit-bite, and dry-point printed on Hahnemuhle Copperplate Bright White 400gsm paper 39 x 49 inches Edition IV of XXX Kara Walker created the monumental etching and aquatint, Resurrection Story Without (as well as "With") Patrons, in 2017. She created two versions of this image, one with additional flanking panels (“With Patrons”). The center and primary image of either version depicts a large sculpture of a naked black woman being raised by several black figures from the water along a rocky shoreline. The subject is presented as a silhouette, which is Walker’s go-to artistic vehicle of representation. The silhouette was a common method of portraiture in the 18th century. It is not complex, but rather, universal, making it easy to understand (think road sign). Walker links silhouette with stereotype because of its closure to interpretation, as well as referencing that specific historical period and the prevailing racial and sexual narrative of the time. Much of Walker’s work imagines alternative historical outcomes and the concept of martyrdom. The figures raise the female figure with ropes around her neck. The figures and symbols of American history cannot escape the legacy of the violence and oppression of slavery. This important image is included in the collections of numerous museums, and to our knowledge has never been offered for sale at auction previously.
