        Aug. 07, 2024

1870s Gettysburg Print, Key to "Repulse of Longstreet's Assault"

        Est: $200 - $300

Battle of Gettysburg New York, ca. 1870 1870s Gettysburg Print, Key to "Repulse of Longstreet's Assault" Map A heliotype print entitled "Key to the Painting and Engraving of the Battle of Gettysburg", based on an original painting by James Walker (1819-1889). 1p, measuring 18.5" x 11" (visible), ca. 1870, New York. Published by John Badger Bachelder, lithographer and Gettysburg historian. The print displays a panoramic view of the battle within a horizontal rectangular box at top, with corresponding numbers and letters to Union/Confederate references and local points listed in a separate rectangular box below. Lightly toned, with uneven staining and scattered foxing throughout. Else, very good. Not examined outside of frame. Matted and displayed to an overall size of 23" x 15.5". John Badger Bachelder (1825-1894) was a painter, lithographer, and photographer best known as a preeminent 19th-century historian whose particular focus was on the Battle of Gettysburg. After the battle, he notably studied the terrain and interviewed soldiers to fully understand the position of each unit, culminating in a panoramic map of the battlefield. Later in 1870, artist James Walker was commissioned by Bachelder to paint an account of Pickett's Charge, entitled "The Repulse of Longstreet's Assault at the Battle of Gettysburg," a massive work that measured 7.5' x 20'. Later in 1873, he wrote an accompanying guidebook and toured widely with Walker's canvas, lecturing across the United States. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
