Samuel Lovett Waldo and William Jewett American, 1783-1861 and 1791-1874, respectively Portrait of Captain Elisha Hart Stamped Waldo & Jewett New York and dated 1833 on the reverse Oil on canvas laid to panel 36 3/4 x 28 1/2 inches Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter A label on the reverse of this vibrant likeness describes a portrait of Captain Elisha Hart of Saybrook, Connecticut painted by Gilbert Stuart in Washington, D.C. The present work bears the stamp of Waldo & Jewett, in New York City. In 1818, William Jewett formally entered into a business partnership with his teacher, the portraitist Samuel Lovett Waldo. In their highly successful association, which lasted until 1854, Waldo was reputed to have painted the heads and hands of their sitters, while Jewett painted the details of costume and the backgrounds. However, in recent years the alleged division of labor between the two painters has come into question. Their sitters included many prominent Americans as well as members of the rising merchant class. Elisha Hart was born in 1758 and died in 1842. A successful local merchant, he was the father of seven daughters. Among the regular guests at his Saybrook mansion were Washington Irving, Fitz-Greene Halleck, and the poet Joseph Rodman Drake. At the time that this compelling portrait was painted, he would have been 75 years of age. Whether or not Waldo and Jewitt employed a touch of artistic license when depicting the robust, ruddy-cheeked Captain Hart, the present work is a wonderful example of their collaboration. C
