Signed Etching of a Egyptian Temple

          Est: £120 - £170

c.1923 AD. A signed etching and aquatint with drypoint attributed to the Scottish artist William Walcot (1874-1943); label on the reverse reads: 'The Crescent Moon, 67 Crouch Street, Colchester, Original Etching Title: 'An Egyptian Temple', Artist: William Walcot'; mounted in a wooden frame. 2.7 kg, 56.5 x 47cm (22 1/4 x 18 1/2"). From the private collection of a Knightsbridge gentleman; acquired on the UK art market, in the 1990s. William Walcot (1874-1943) was a Scottish architect, etcher and graphic artist. 'An Egyptian Temple' is elsewhere titled 'An Egyptian Palace'. Walcot’s 'imaginative' plates were the most sought-after of all of his designs during his lifetime, and are without comparison during the whole of the British Etching Revival. The representation of temples is a pastiche of the first pylon of the temple of Horus at Edfu, but the artist has inserted three papyrus-headed columns as found in the temple of Hathor at Dendera.
