Cheong Tuck Wai (b. 1979, Kuantan, Pahang) received his Diploma in Illustration (2001) and Fine Art (2004) from the Dasein Academy of Art in Kuala Lumpur where he also teaches part time as a senior lecturer in the fine art department. The award winning artist is noted for his innovative mixed media paintings of human figures and the environment that revolves around aspects of memory, time and space. While contemplating on the shifting of time and its passages, Tuck Wai’s keen eye for the subtle, poignant and sublime in the everyday are made more compelling through his choice images and expert use of materials that enhances the ambience surrounding the subject matter.

A regular participant in the local art circuit, Tuck Wai won the Malaysia Nokia Arts Award in 2003. He has shown at the Philip Morris Malaysia Art Awards (2003) and the Young ContemporaryAward (2004 & 2010), both at the National Visual Art Gallery, Malaysia. He received the Gold Award from the United Overseas Bank (UOB) annual competition under the Painting of the Year category in 2013. In 2009 and 2011, Tuck Wai was among the finalist in the Malaysia Emerging Artist Award (MEAA). In 2013, Tuck Wai, together with four other contestants, emerged as the winners of the MEAA.

        Cheong Tuck Wai is well known for his innovative mixed media paintings of human figures and the environment. Experimenting with various mix mediums such as image transfer, the artist creates a nostalgic image of a building, filled with childhood memories. Cheong had a Diploma in Illustration (2001) and Fine Art (2004) from the Dasein Academy of Art, Kuala Lumpur. In 2003, he won the Malaysia Nokia Arts Award and 10 years later, his biggest, of US$10,000, for winning the Gold Award (Established Artist category) of the UOB Painting Of The Year, with his work titled Homes. His solo exhibition Linger, was held at Hom Art Trans, Selangor (2016). Group exhibitions include Matrade Shanghai with the Gallery, Art Expo Malaysia 2016 and 2017. His solo exhibition Transition was held in 2021.

        Cheong Tuck Wai is well known for his innovative mixed media paintings of human figures and the environment. This work was included in Piece Of Me, a gathering of visual artists to demonstrate their solidarity with each other in providing help to those in need through the arts. This art event was created to raise financial relief of the victim of Haiyan Typhoon disaster in 2013 through an art exhibition by selected young and emerging artists. The facial expression was well portrayed by the artist, capturing the innocence, the positivity of a kid. Cheong had a Diploma in Illustration (2001) and Fine Art (2004) from the Dasein Academy of Art, KL, where he taught part-time. In 2003, he won the Malaysia Nokia Arts Award and 10 years later, his biggest, of US$10,000, for winning the Gold Award (Established Artist category of the UOB Painting of the Year, with his work titled Homes). His solo exhibition LINGER, was held at HOM Art Trans, Ampang Selangor, Malaysia (2016). Group exhibitions include Matrade Shanghai with the Gallery, Art Expo Malaysia 2017 and 2016 with G13 Gallery.

        It is no accident that Cheong Tuck Wai’s works are couched in grainy silver gelatin tones simulating photographs, as his ooh-so-nostalgic memories are about departures, disappearances and loss. ‘Linger’ (in 2016), the title of his dedicated solo at HOM Art Trans as part of the prize for winning the Malaysia Emerging Artists award in 2013, arrayed loved ones (late grandmother on rattan rocking chair) and objects like his father’s old TV set from his (father’s) hometown in Batu Arang, for an autobiographical mish-mesh. The other part of the prize, which had four other equal winners, was a 10-day intensive visit to art centres and icons in Bandung and Yogyakarta in Indonesia. Cheong had a Diploma in Illustration (2001) and Fine Art (2004) from the Dasein Academy of Art, KL.
