      Wahl, Salomon Johann (1689 Chemnitz - 1765 Copenhagen) "Prince Eugene Francis of Savoy-Carignan", portrait depicting him as a military leader, oil on canvas, inscribed on the reverse, 144x111cm, 152x120cm with frame, traces of restoration, mounted canvas. *Provenance: private ownership, family property - descendants of the Diefenbach family. *Johann Salomon Wahl was a pupil of Nicolaus Georg Greve and studied under David Hoyer in Leipzig before settling in Hamburg in 1719, where he portrayed not only the Holstein nobility but also the Danish aristocracy. From 1730 he then settled in Copenhagen and worked as court painter for Christian VI of Denmark. The painting is showing Prince Eugene Francis of Savoy-Carignan, called Prince Eugene. He was one of the most important commanders of the Habsburg Empire and from 1697 he was commander-in-chief in the Great Turkish War and from 1716 he fought in the Venetian-Austrian Turkish War, which he successfully ended with the conquest of the fortress of Belgrade in 1717. Wahl, Salomon Johann (1689 Chemnitz - 1765 Kopenhagen) "Prinz Eugen Franz von Savoyen-Carignan", Porträtdarstellung als Heerführer, Öl auf Leinwand, rückseitig bezeichnet, 144x111cm, 152x120cm mit Rahmen, Restaurierungsspuren, doublierte Leinwand *Provenienz: Aus Familienbesitz - Nachkommen der Familie Diefenbach. *Johann Salomon Wahl war Schüler von Nicolaus Georg Greve und lernte unter David Hoyer in Leipzig und ließ sich dann 1719 in Hamburg nieder wo er neben dem holsteinischen Adel auch den dänischen Adel porträtierte. Ab 1730 ließ er sich dann in Kopenhagen nieder und arbeitete als Hofmaler für Christian VI. von Dänemark. Das Gemälde zeigt Prinz Eugen Franz von Savoyen-Carignan, genannt Prinz Eugen, dargestellt. Er war einer der bedeutendsten Feldherren des Habsburgerreiches und ab 1697 Oberbefehlshaber im Großen Türkenkrieg und ab 1716 kämpfte er im Venezianisch-Österreichischen Türkenkrieg, den er mit der Eroberung der Festung Belgrad 1717 erfolgreich beendete. Dieser Sieg ist im "Lied vom Prinzen Eugen", auch bekannt als "Prinz Eugen, der edle Ritter" verewigt.
