        Aug. 25, 2024

Samsudin Wahab, Azam Aris, Fadly Sabran, Zul Husni Mohd Ridzuan - Untitled, 2008

        Est: RM20,000 - RM38,000

Executed on a monumental scale, this single art piece is created from the artistic collaboration between four talented artists at the beginning of their blossoming art careers. Bridging fresh perspectives and expertise in different skills, the artists have combined their distinctive strengths to create a dynamic reimagination of kampung life. The rural landscape and people were characterised in the style of cartoons which gives a playful aesthetic, executed with contemporary painting effects that exemplifies an elevated shared vision. Chickens are reared as a stable source of food, for both their meat and eggs. The slaughtered chickens are handled by the culinary chefs, presenting them as delicious meals, served with 'Peri-peri' flavours. Adults may also use their reared chickens (pets) to compete for 'beauty contest', or cock fighting, while kids are just merely having fun chasing the chickens.

        Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

Large satirical caricatures of whimsical animals are boldly depicted through the medium of linocut. Here, the mirror acts as a device to reveal the subject's true form, in this case, a suited monkey with a penchant for cinematic arts. Samsudin Wahab achieved double success in 2009 when he won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award and was chosen resident-artist at Rimbun Dahan. Samsudin Wahab (b. Perak, 1984) Keluarga Bahagia, 2020

        Est: RM2,500 - RM4,500

An air of angst pervades among the six EggHeads in the drab brown carton, with just enough space for social distancing. The glum looks among the egg-aggerated caricatures are no surprise, given the Covid-19 pandemic with its protracted enforced incarceration and isolation on pain of fine. The work of painted eggshells can be read on several levels: ennui behind the Keluarga Bahagia (Happy Family) façade, or little tension or cracks emerging when the family members are virtually strapped together, and the utter unspeakable boredom of pacing the parameters of one’s abode. This work by Samsudin Wahab was from a group show called Mending Fence Tales From An Isolation in 2020. It brought together 41 artists not only from Malaysia, but also those from Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia. Had this work been done after the new government of Dato' Sri Ismail Sabri with its mantra of Keluarga Malaysia in August 2021, it could have elicited more insinuations. Samsudin Wahab won the hugely coveted Major Award in the 2019 Bakat Muda Sezaman (Young Contemporary Artists) competition, after a 2013 Juror’s Prize. He won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award in 2009, the year he was chosen resident-artist at Rimbun Dahan. His other notable awards were 2nd Prize in Goethe-Institut’s Salon Meets Art (2007) and a Consolation Prize in the Tanjung Heritage competition (2005). He also had residencies in India (2010) and with HOM (2008). A co-founder of the printmaking collective, Cetak Kolektif, he studied for his BFA at the Mara Institute of Technology in 2007.

Samsudin Wahab (b. Perak, 1984) The Last Supper, 2011

        Est: RM18,000 - RM32,000

Hail, the New ‘King’! Long Live The ‘King’! The tired refrain installs a new Skull leader, fancy coat and red tie et al, to the ‘throne’ but one booby-trapped with spikes and springs. With knife and fork in hand, the new supremo is fawned at with a choice slice of meat but has the Skull King appetite for the bait or will this be his biblical ‘Last Supper’ with his detractors bent on poisoning him? This typical political scenario lives in perpetuity in the wake of ego, conspiracies and corruption, so unless there are drastic bold reformations, it’s status quo and déjà vu. Samsudin Wahab, one of the most consistent of the younger artists, finally hit paydirt by clinching the Major Award of the Bakat Muda Sezaman (Young Contemporary Artists) competition in 2019, after winning the Juror’s Award in 2013! Earlier wins were Consolation Prize in the Tanjung Heritage competition in 2005 and 2nd Prize in Goethe-Institut’s Saloon Meet Art competition in 2007. Dealing with paint and sculptures, he is also into performance, and his works impinge on socio-cultural issues related to self and the larger national context. Coming from parents who are paddy farmers in Semanggol, Samsudin graduated with a diploma in Fine Arts at the UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak (2002-2005) and BFA (Majoring in Printmaking, 2005-2007). In 2008, he held his first solo, Enough, at Taksu, Kuala Lumpur. He was a resident artist of Rimbun Dahan in 2009, the year he won the Malaysia Emerging Artists Award. He was also resident artist of HOM in April-June 2008 and Khazanah Nasional’s in Mumbai, India, in 2010. Hail, ‘Jeneral’ Samsudin Wahab self-caricaturised with a goofy smile and large elephant ears plugged with probably an audio-prompter or he could be wrapped in a world of his own, listening to his favourite music. As in character, the general is unashamedly bedecked with ostentatious medals, never a mite embarrassed over the scandal of two missing engines from government fighter jets parked at the Sg Besi air base in 2007 (they got sold to a South American dealer, it was revealed). If you want more shenanigans, there’s the submarine deal fiasco in France, and the phasing-out of the Nuri (Sikorsky S-61A-4) helicopter after 89 crew members lost their lives in 15 accidents. Malaysia dropped to 56th from 47th on the 2009 Corruption Index by Transparency International. Samsudin Wahab won the Malaysia Emerging Artist Award in 2009. Samsudin Wahab narrates a satirical scene of an authoritative figure, Hanuman being disturbed by three tiny cats. The main character is portrayed in a formal suit with six hands, each carrying a different weapon, whilst trying to defend himself from the little creatures at his leg, resulting in a charming scene infused with metaphor and humour. SAMSUDIN WAHAB (b. 1984) Powerless, 2012

        Est: RM9,000 - RM16,000

Is it a parody or a self-actualizing, a figure with a tomato head in the classic pose of Rodin's The Thinker. The head itself is pathetic with blemishes on the skin with uneven colours and a spot of pimples, and some tool stuck on the right funny eye, an eye-opener? Even the mouth is stuffed with a rectangle object. You can't blame the tomato for being schizophrenic, a fatalist disorder – is it a fruit or a vegetable? In case you miss the point, a sash emblazoned with the word, Powerless, is strapped on the body like the proverbial albatross of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. Tomato Head gives you the impression of someone common and ordinary and is going through some self-doubt. All over a thread of vine runs, demarcating the figure's sphere. For the artist Samsudin Wahab, this work is in the vein of his 2012 trending such as Bangkai Dalam Dinding. Samsudin Wahab achieved double success in 2009 when he won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award and was chosen resident-artist at Rimbun Dahan. Birthday cakes come in all weird forms nowadays. Here, Samsudin Wahab ‘celebrates' a 5th Anniversary (with the laurel), of what? His graduation from the Mara Institute of Technology, perhaps, or something more personal, with all the raw pathos of some enervating turmoil. The mood is depressing, what with the preponderance of raw umber and burnt sienna, and framed incongruously in cheerful whitish floral motif. What is more disturbing is the brick kiln, for lack of a better word, with a sealed iron crating, or the ugly slab of sausage-like stuff on top and inside it. Sure, it's a stomach-churning sight and one would expect such gory images from an over-heated imagination, and a very restless spirit. Samsudin is undoubtedly a young genius artist!

Death stares at us, the inevitability and certainty of it a constant in our daily lives, edging ever close to the end. Inspired by Memento Mori objects, Samsudin Wahab created this poignant self-portrait which speaks volumes about the transitory nature of life. This is an extraordinary self portrait, probably a reflection of the artist’s mood at that time during the transition period of his life, battling huge pressure from collectors, galleries, and himself. In 2009, he won the Malaysia Emerging Artists Award and was resident-artist at Rimbun Dahan. He was awarded Khazanah Nasional’s residency in Mumbai, India, in 2010. In 2013, he won the Juror’s Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition (Bakat Muda Sezaman). He won 2nd Prize in the Goethe-Institute’s Salon Meets Art in 2007 and a Consolation Prize in the Tanjung Heritage competition in 2005. Samsudin Wahab obtained his BFA, Majoring in Printmaking, from Universiti ITM in 2007, and his Fine Art Diploma in 2005. Samsudin Wahab, or Budin, is known for his socio-political parodies of local and international events. In ‘Dono’s Angels Fallen From The Sky’, he appropriates Indonesian Heri Dono’s sculptural caricatures in his comment on the three-week armed conflict called Operation Cast Lead that broke out in the Gaza Strip between the Israelis and Palestinians in 2008-2009. More than a thousand people lost their lives and limbs. The aggressors were shown like a pack of wolves, the winged apocalypse reminiscent of Albrecht Durer’s Four Horsemen. The drama of the creatures flying and abusing innovative technology is to heighten the tension. In 2009, he won the Malaysia Emerging Artists Award and was resident-artist in Rimbun Dahan. He was awarded Khazanah Nasional’s residency in Mumbai, India, in 2010. The unnerving picture of a ‘Tree Man’ with feet in cement cast and the right side of the body self-bevelled is a morbid psychological contemplation. Some kind of ennui has set in after years of being an artist, and the ‘victim’ feels that he has to resort to a self-mutilation of sorts to set himself free, so that he can move on to new things. On another level, it could be read as a degradation of the environment where the ‘Tree Man’ faces inevitable doom.Samsudin Wahab graduated with a Bachelor (Hons) Fine Arts, Majoring in Printmaking, from the University Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM) in 2007. Gilbert & George Burger, anyone? Samsudin Wahab believes strongly that all living beings should exist in co-existence and not be disrespectful of one another, or worse exploit, discriminate or harm others. So, in a sardonic way, he decides to sacrifice the British art duo icon Gilbert & George, with the head inverted to each other, as a burger sandwich. Gilbert & George, both in their 70s and who call themselves 'human sculptures' are known for their colourful and large photo-based works on soci-political issues. This work was donated towards the World Wildlife Fund for endangered specis conservation.Samsudin Wahab graduated with a Bachelor (Hons) Fine Arts, Majoring in Printmaking, from the University Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM) in 2007. Illustrated here is a ferocious dog with its jaw wide open in the midst of delivering a speech. It wears the spiked crown from Libertas, the Roman goddess who is the symbol of liberty. The original torch and tablet evoking the law have been replaced by a gas nozzle and a wind up mechanism. Ironically, placed over the neck of the creature are a spiked leash and an alphabet necklace comprised of the word ‘AKAL’, which means deception.   Samsudin Wahab skilfully incorporates elements of tattoo artistry, street aesthetics, and Japanese woodblock prints to express social political themes in his paintings. Having formally trained in print making, he developed a highly stylized form of combining vivid iconography accompanied with provocative texts. His travelling exhibits abroad are able to communicate a universal idea that transcends geographical boundaries. Universal resonance is achieved through the ‘personification of animals and the use of momento mori skulls and skeletons’. Dark humour and satire are infused with narratives based on keen observations and reflections on the surrounding landscape. His artistic practice covers an extensive spectrum of print making, installations, sculptures, and sound and video art.   Upon obtaining his B.A (Hons) Art & Design (Fine Arts) at the MARA Institute of Technology in 2007, Samsudin Wahab won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEA Award) in 2009. He exhibited his first solo exhibition Enough! in 2008 at Taksu Gallery KL. As part of the MEA showcase in 2010, his second solo show titled Not Enough was exhibited at Galeri Chandan. He has exhibited in collective group exhibitions abroad in countries such as Denmark and Korea, including international art fairs such as Art Stage Singapore 2013.He participated in the Rimbun Dahan Malaysia-Australia year-long residency programme in 2009-2010 and is a member of the experimental sound and performance group SO Sound. He was the first recipient of the Fergana Art Fellowship (Visual Arts), which serves as a platform for contemporary artists to reflect and explore new directions in their art practice. WORK: Propositions for the Future is a recent exhibition showcasing the works in progress as the outcome of a six month intensive research, documentation and fieldwork.   REFERENCE A Prison for your Mind , Eva McGovern, Malaysian Emerging Artist Award, Winners Showcase 2010, Galeri Chandan and House of Matahati, 2010. Mandatory-On-Air is one of ten paintings which were displayed in Samsuddin Wahab's solo exhibition titled Not Enough after winning the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award in 2010. Illustrated here is a skeletal figure sitting on a white electric chair - depicted pushing the switch down to 'ON' - triggering an electric shock as represented by the shock hazard signs. The show Not Enough represents the artist's "dreams of an unwritten future." It marks "a new beginning of subject matter his work transcends mere graphic illustration through poetic metaphors and visual strategies that emphasise a new phase of self questioning and realisation. Fluctuating between the real world and the dream world his contradictions, hopes and desires emerge in a confessionary moment that represents a new chapter for yet more epic takes on reality and illusion." One of Malaysia's most exciting contemporary artists, Samsudin Wahab creates large scale works in a surreal manner conveying his concerns over "issues of conspiracy, social power, and governmental control over the masses". His subject matter of politics and social commentary is depicted with high intellect and wit, displaying a concoction of digital iconography, comic book and tattoo-styled imagery to form and to derive from an elusive fantasy. A graduate from UiTM Seri Iskandar Perak in 2005, he then obtained his degree in Printmaking with a Bachelor (Hons) in Fine Art from UiTM, Shah Alam in 2007. He held his first solo exhibition titled Enough! in 2008 where this piece was displayed. He was the recipient of the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award in 2008 which granted him a solo show titled Not Enough in Kuala Lumpur in 2010. He participated in an artist residency programme at Rimbun Dahan from 2009 to 2010. He belongs to the experimental sound and performance group SO sound. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Malaysia, Denmark and Korea since 2003 with his participation at Art Stage Singapore in 2013 that displayed his epic piece titled Spectacular (2012).
