Thonet Flower Post, Design presumably Otto Wagner, around 1920

            Est: €200 - €260

Beech Wood/ Bentwood Austria, around 1920 Design presumably by Otto Wagner (1841-1918), Austrian architect and Designer Rare design Dimensions: h 123 cm x w 37 cm x d 37 cm Very good, slightly used condition Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 630 EUR Since Michael Thonet has been called to Munich by Prince Metternich in 1842, he created several pieces of furniture together with Austrian artists and designers. This rare flower post made from the signature Thonet bentwood goes back to a design by Otto Wagner. Two shelves have been mounted between two high round archs, one rather low and the other quite high. The only decorative elements on this slim piece of furniture are the circularly reticulated aprons on both sides of the lower shelf. The flower post convinces through its functional form and the soft curves that accompany each element; even the shelves and the aprons are slightly rounded. The combination of functionality and harmony of the form is typical for both Thonet and the designs by Otto Wagner. The flower post is in good condition, with minimal traces of age and use. It is approximately 123 cm high and 37 cm broad and deep. Thonet Thonet was established by Michael Thonet (1796-1871) and is family owned to this day. Michael Thonet began to develop the production of furniture from mechanic to industrial manufacture. For this purpose, he experimented with bentwood. He achieved his breakthrough with the Viennese bistro chair, also known as Chair No. 14, from 1859; employing division of labour, working steps were standardised. In addition, the chair could be disassembled and thus became a relatively cheap mass product. The chair turned Thonet into an internationally successful business, the company produced and sold two million different objects in 1912. In the 1930’s, tabular steel was added as a new material and Thonet produced designs by Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Even today, the classics as well as new designs are produced in the company headquarters in Hessian Frankenberg. Otto Wagner (1841-1918) As an adolescent, Wagner had a good, upper-class upbringing and in 1860, he began to study in Berlin at the Royal Building Academy as well as the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He also took a mason’s apprenticeship and worked in Heinrich von Förster’s (1832-1889) studio. In the 1850s/60s, there was a boom in the construction period and Wagner could realize numerous buildings as a young Architect. His most important works are post-office savings banks, the Kirche am Steinhof (Church of St. Leopold), his residential villas and the Wienzeilenhäuser. Otto Wagner (1841-1918) As an adolescent, Wagner had a good, upper-class upbringing and in 1860, he began to study in Berlin at the Royal Building Academy as well as the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. His most important works are post-office savings banks, the Kirche am Steinhof (Church of St. Leopold), his residential villas and the Wienzeilenhäuser. Jakob & Josef Kohn Jacob Kohn (1791-1866) founded his company together with his son Josef (1814-1884) in 1849. They produced wooden components and soon began producing bentwood. They opened production centers in Bohemia, Krakow and Russia and already in 1900 more than 6300 workers were busy producing more than 5500 pieces of furniture each day. Thanks to the cooperation with such renowned artists as Josef Hoffmann, Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos and Gustav Siegel, the company soon made a name for itself as the producer of fashionable and modern furniture. They received many awards, gold medals and even medals from Austria, Spain, Belgium and Russia. The company merged with the Mundus AG in 1914 that also produced for Thonet (Thonet-Kohn-Mundus). Pieces of furniture by Kohn can today be seen in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris as well as in the Museum for applied art, the MAK Vienna.
