Date: 19th century Description: Amidst trees in a beautiful landscape park, the classicist mausoleum of the Cistercian Abbey of Altzella in Saxony stands with a bright façade. The clear lines of the building, which follows the model of an ancient temple in its forms, form a sharp but not incongruous contrast to the surrounding nature. The hard edges of the pediment, supported by pilasters and a metopean frieze with a Christian memorial depiction, meet the soft smallness of the foliage. The mausoleum was built from 1787 by the Oberland surveyor Christian Adolf Franck after the earlier funeral chapel had been damaged by Prussian soldiers during the Seven Years' War. As the son of a hydraulic engineer and himself a teacher of technical drawing in architecture at the Dresden Academy, Otto Wagner succeeded very well in reproducing the architectural forms in this early lithograph and setting them in a harmonious dialogue with their surroundings. O. WAGNER (1803-1861), Von Civitella nach Olevano, around 1831, Watercolor

      Est: €2,700 - €3,600

Otto Wagner (1803 Torgau - 1861 Dresden): On the way from Civitella to Olevano, c. 1831, Watercolor Technique: Watercolor over Pen drawing on Paper Stamp: Verso Collector's stamp, Georg und Dr. F. Wilhelm Denzel. Munich. 20th century, 19th century Inscription: Verso inscribed by the artist's hand: "Von Civitella nach Olevano". Verso further inscription: "Otto Wagner". Date: c. 1831 Description: Trained at the Dresden Academy under Johann Gottfried Jentzsch, Otto Wagner made a name for himself above all as a painter of romantic views of his home region, which he produced, among other things, as models for extensive series of engravings. Later he also worked as a scene painter at the Royal Court Theatre in Dresden. In 1830/31 he went on a long study trip to Italy, from which he also brought back our watercolour. On the way from Civitella to Olevano, the work shows our artist's itinerary in the direction of the place in the Campagna Romana that had already been a pilgrimage destination for German artists at the beginning of the 19th century. On the craggy rock, the narrow path leads along the imposing precipice, where one can only guess how it must have made the travelling artist dizzy with fear and awe in equal measure. Walking in a southerly direction, the most impressive views must have opened up to the hiker day after day, not only since Civitella, so that one can effortlessly put oneself in his place if one imagines him marvelling and drawing incessantly. Our watercolour, which because of its colouring could well have been painted on a midsummer evening, evokes pure delight at the open expanse of the Italian hilly landscape. The picture is staggered between a foreground that is very detailed for a sketch and a background that is almost infinitely far away, abruptly separated only by the edge of the path to be walked. With delicate brushstrokes, Wagner creates the near and distant ranges of hills, using the comparatively hard contour of the pen only in the foreground. The result is a fascinating, multi-layered view of a traveller who cannot stop marvelling at the nature that surrounds him.
