Our watercolour, which because of its colouring could well have been painted on a midsummer evening, evokes pure delight at the open expanse of the Italian hilly landscape. The picture is staggered between a foreground that is very detailed for a sketch and a background that is almost infinitely far away, abruptly separated only by the edge of the path to be walked. With delicate brushstrokes, Wagner creates the near and distant ranges of hills, using the comparatively hard contour of the pen only in the foreground. The result is a fascinating, multi-layered view of a traveller who cannot stop marvelling at the nature that surrounds him.
