      Frank Russell Wadsworth (Am., 1874-1905)

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Plein air oil on canvas depicting a garden scene with blooming flowers and pergola, signed lower left "Frank Wadsworth"; sight approx. 36"W x 30"H; gilt wood and gesso frame 49"W x 44"H; painting with cracking and losses to paint along right and upper edges, other scattered losses to paint; frame with losses and repairs---Frank Russell Wadsworth was born in Chicago and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. While in Spain in the late 1890s, Wadsworth met American artist, William Merritt Chase, who would become Wadsworth's teacher, mentor and friend. He moved to New York City in 1897 to study under Chase at the Chase School of Art. He also spent summers at Chase's private school of outdoor painting on Long Island. In 1903, Wadsworth worked with Chase in Bristol, Pennsylvania, and traveled with him to Holland to attend his summer painting class in Haarlem. Chicago critics took note of his plein air paintings, one of which received the Young Fortnightly Prize in 1904. He also received a bronze medal at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis that same year and exhibited his work in several major national shows. In 1905, he had a solo show with the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and also accompanied Chase to Spain again. Wadsworth died unexpectedly in Spain at the age of 31 cutting short the "promise of a brilliant future" as reported by the Chicago Chronicle. He painted probably fewer than 100 works in his short career.
