      • Hans Wacker, alias Jan Tenhagen, Seascape, Amsterdam, c.1900
        Apr. 19, 2016

Hans Wacker, alias Jan Tenhagen, Seascape, Amsterdam, c.1900

        Est: €750 - €975

Oil on cardboard Netherlands, Amsterdam, around 1900 Hans Wacker, alias Jan Tenhagen (1868-1958) – German painter and protagonist of one of the most sensational art forgery scandals of the 20th century Signed and inscribed lower right ‘J. Tenhagen, Amsterdam’ Gold composed frame with acanthus leave décor Total dimensions, framed: 73 x 87.5 cm Good condition This oil painting is the work of the German painter Hans Wacker, who, while he was living in Holland in 1913-14, signed his paintings with the pseudonyms 'Jan Tenhagen' or 'Hans Wacker-Elsen'. The painting on hand is signed with 'J. Tenhagen Amsterdam'. Wacker's marine pieces were mostly depictions of the Dutch coats and the lively harbors and bays. With greatest technical accuracy the artist has worked the panel and thereby created a work that combines all facets of his fine feeling for the changing atmospheres of the sea. So is the horizon slightly pushed down below the center line to leave enough room for the sky. On the waves of the sea the fishermen are performing their duties. The skills of the German painter Hans Wacker, whose son Otto was convicted in 1932 for the sale of about 30 fake Van Gogh paintings, still lead to speculations. In 2012 the exhibition 'Hans Wacker = Jan Tenhagen = Vincent van Gogh' considered the question whether the fakes came from the hand of the artist. The painting is mounted in a pretty, elaborately crafted gold composed frame with acanthus leave décor. Painting and frame are in good condition with traces of age and wear. The colors are minimally soiled. The stretcher frame measures 49 x 63 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 73 x 87.5 cm.
