    Oil on canvas, relined Austria, 1829 Johann Wachtl (1778-c. 1839) – Austrian painter and graphic artist Dimensions: 86.5 x 69 cm Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany On the reverse is a typographic label, reciting an inscription on the painting that is no longer visible after the relining. It says: Doctor Franz Ketterer, k.u.k. Rath., Dirigierender Stabsfeldarzt. Ritter des H. Georgordens, […] österreichische große goldene Ehren[…] mit Kette nebst der mittleren Ehr und Band. Doctor der Medizin und Chirurgie. Dirigierender Stabsfeldarzt in der Provinz Illyrien, Inneroesterreich und Tyrol, correspondierendes Mitglied der medizinische-chirurgischen Academie zu Neapel. J. Wachtl Graz 1829 Condition: The relined painting bears overall smaller spots of retouching and larger areas painted over as well as unobtrusive craquelure. In addition, there are faint pressure marks evident from the stretcher. The overall impression is good, consistent with age. The painting measures 86.5 x 69 cm. Johann Wachtl (1778-ca. 1839) The Austrian painter Johann Wachtl attended the Vienna Academy, which files recorded him as a miniaturist. His teacher was Heinrich Füger, for whom he probably also worked as an assistant and made replicas of his miniatures. Later, he settled in Graz and became a respected and sought-after portraitist in the 1820s and 1830s. The picture gallery of the Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz holds some portraits by the artist.
