Jan van der Vucht, Church Interior

    Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Signed and dated lower left (on the base of the plinth): van Vucht 1635 Fe Jan van der Vucht, who died young, specialised in church interiors during his short artistic career, whereby the present painting is the largest work by the Rotterdam painter that is known to date and can therefore certainly be counted among his major works (cf. the catalogue raisonné in: B. G. Maillet: Intérieurs d'Églises 1580-1720. La Peinture architecturale des Écoles du Nord, Brussels 2012, pp. 459-69). The painting has been in family ownership in northern Germany without interruption since the late 19th century. Works by Jan van der Vucht are rare, and dated paintings such as the present one, which was created in 1635 and thus shortly before van der Vucht's early death, are even rarer. As is usually the case, it does not depict an actual church building, but rather a capriccio made up of various motifs. Classical elements such as pillars, pilasters and entablatures are reminiscent of Renaissance and Baroque churches, but are combined with Gothic tracery in the windows and blind arcades. The composition is symmetrical, with a central view of the vaulted apse. Van der Vucht depicted very similar architecture in another, much smaller church interior (cf. Maillet, op. cit., p. 469, no. M- 1747). Various figures and numerous dogs round off this imposing large-format work.

    Est: €8,000 - €12,000

(Rotterdam circa 1603–1637) A church interior with elegant figures, oil on panel, 73 x 99 cm, framed Provenance: Private collection, Vienna We are grateful to Ellis Dullaart from the RKD, The Hague, for confirming the attribution to Jan van der Vucht on the basis of a photograph. We are also grateful to Fred G. Meijer for independently confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. The present painting closely relates to an almost identical composition by Van der Vucht with similar measurements (73.5 x 106.5 cm) that was offered in these rooms, 21 October 2014, lot 60. Meijer proposes that the version auctioned in 2014 is most probably a good period copy of the present painting, which is also in a much better state of preservation (private communication, February 2023). Despite a short career that ended with his death by his mid-30s, the enthralling paintings left behind by Jan van der Vucht provide an important contribution to the genre of architectural visions in the art of the Dutch golden age. As is evident in the present painting, his expansive and refined interiors represent an ideal world of classical orders with an intense, bright, and dreamlike atmosphere. Born in Rotterdam around 1603, Jan van der Vucht’s life coincided with one of the most dynamic periods in Dutch art. He was a pupil of Bartholomeus van Bassen (1590–1652) and shared artistic similarities with painters like Hendrik van Steenwijk II (1580–1649) and others who specialised in interiors, especially of churches. Furthermore, the compositions of Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527–1609) were another major inspiration that also helped Vucht in his understanding of space and perspective. Indeed, Van der Vucht effortlessly mixed inspirations from existing buildings, architectural engravings and pattern books, and his own imagination.

(1330643) (18)

    Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Inscribed lower left: H./SteenWy f Paintings by the Rotterdam based painter Jan van der Vucht are rare. The circa eight dated works by the artist lead us to believe that van der Vucht was active between 1627 and 1635. Because of their subject matter, precision and style, van der Vucht's pictures are often confused with the works of better-known contemporary architectural painters such as Dirk van Delen, Pieter Neefs the Elder or Hendrik van Steenwijk, with the present work formerly being attributed to the latter. Until 2012, the panel was considered to be a work by Bartholomeus van Bassen (see RKD database, no. 1001172443). As is so often the case in the painter's work, the piece does not depict the interior of a real Dutch church, but instead a capriccio of a fictitious room.
