Measurements: 45 x 54 cm; 74 x 94 cm (frame). In this work the painter chooses an idyllic natural corner, a voucher in which we see a shepherd, several cows grazing and two goats. The composition is classical, centering the main figures in the foreground and behind a large valley over which the open sky can be seen, thus showing a deep and open composition allowing us to see the distant mountains, worked with a delicate and nuanced chromatism, cold character, effect of distance, which contrasts with the warmer and denser tones of the foreground. François Vuagnat was a member of the Société des artistes français and of various French associations in Geneva, member of the Cercle des artistes (from 1853) and of the Cercle des Arts et des Lettres until his death. Painter, pupil of Jean-Léonard Lugardon and the animal painter Charles Humbert. In 1909 he organized a retrospective exhibition of his work at the Bâtiment Electoral in Geneva. Parallel to his activities as a painter, he pursued a career as a photographer, and in 1857 he exhibited his photographs at the Swiss General Exhibition in Bern. In 1862 he received an honorable mention at the London exhibition, in the section devoted to photography (Journal de Genève, July 16, 1862). It presents faults on the pictorial surface.

The city was booming. The air and expectations of those living during that time would have been electric with possibilities, priming the city for its most monumental exhibition of the century. In 1880, the Melbourne International Exhibition graced the city with curiosities, industrial artifacts and artworks spanning the world abroad. Tywcross, along with countless others, soaked up the offerings of Europe with great enthusiasm. Visiting numerous times, Tywcross eagerly acquired over 200 paintings and objéts d'art for his collection, including this work by Vaugnat from the exhibition's French Court, (lot 33) Bellerive (Lac de Genéve). Thoroughly documented, this work is an endearing testament to Melbourne's love affair with art and the city's ties to its illustrious colonial past.
