Michail Aleksandrovic Vrubel' Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, Illustrator, b. 1856 - d. 1910

Mikhail Vrubel (March 17, 1856 – April 14, 1910, all n.s.) – a 19th–20th century Russian painter who worked in all genres of art, including painting, graphics, decorative sculpture, and theatrical art. In 1896, Vrubel married the famous singer Nadezhda Zabela-Vrubel whom he regularly painted.

Soviet historian Nina Dmitrieva [ru] compared Vrubel's artistic biography to a three-act drama with prologue and epilogue, while the transition between acts was rapid and unexpected. The "Prologue" refers to his earlier years of studying and choosing a career path. The "first act" peaked in the 1880s when Vrubel was studying at the Imperial Academy of Arts and then moved to Kiev to study Byzantine and Christian art. The "second act" corresponded to the so-called "Moscow period" that started in 1890 with the painting "The Demon Seated" and ended in 1902 with "The Demon Downcast" and the subsequent hospitalization of the artist. The "third act" lasted from 1903 to 1906 when Vrubel was suffering from his mental illness that gradually undermined his physical and intellectual capabilities. For the last four years of his life, already being blind, Vrubel lived only physically.[1]

In 1880–1890, Vrubel's creative aspirations did not find support of the Imperial Academy of Arts and art critics. However, many private collectors and patrons were fascinated with his paintings, including famous maecenas Savva Mamontov, as well as painters and critics who coalesced around the journal "Mir iskusstva". Eventually, Vrubel's works were exhibited at Mir Iskusstva's own art exhibitions and Sergei Diaghilev retrospectives. At the beginning of the 20th century, Vrubel's art became an organic part of the Russian Art Nouveau. On November 28, 1905, he was awarded the title of Academician of Painting for his "fame in the artistic field" – just when Vrubel almost finished his career as an artist.

    VRUBEL, MIKHAIL (1856-1910) - Volkhova

    Est: £100,000 - £200,000

VRUBEL, MIKHAIL Volkhova. Earthenware with lustre glazes, height 41.5 cm. Provenance: Icons, Russian Pictures and Works of Art, Sotheby's London, 24 November 1992, lot 38. Important private collection, Europe. Related literature: For similar work, see Ia Peterburg Liubliu. Russkii muzei v Moskve, St Petersburg, Palace Editions, p. 104, illustrated and listed. Volkhova belongs to the famous series of Mikhail Vrubel's sculptures inspired by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Sadko. The artist first tackled this folk story in 1897, after marrying the opera singer Nadezhda Zabela (1868-1913), one of the most brilliant sopranos of her time. The artist became a great admirer of Sadko, since the part of the Sea Princess Volkhova, sung by Zabela in the 1896 production of the opera, came to be the pinnacle of her career. The image of the Sea Princess Volkhova, created by Zabela, who would appear on stage with her hair loose and intertwined with seaweed, and wearing a costume made from a design by Vrubel, in turn, inspired the artist to create a number of works. In 1898, he painted the pictures The Sea Princess (State Russian Museum) and The Sea King's Farewell to Princess Volkhova (State Tretyakov Gallery) and, in 1899, he reproduced his favourite musical image in majolica. There are different versions of this sculpture, which is coated with reducing glazes in the brown-to-ochre range with a golden, magenta-copper, dark purple, opal-pink and olive sheen. It was the abundance of the colour choices and the endless variety of purely pictorial effects that attracted Vrubel to majolica. In the version presented for auction, one of the most successful variants of this topic, the iridescent mother-of-pearl surface resembles a shell, and the whole figure of Volkhova gives the impression that she is ethereal and unreal. The Sea Princess appears before us, with her unfastened hair seeming to flow along her body together with the water, and wearing a kokoshnik crown on her head. Her pose is unconstrained, as she looks thoughtfully at the viewer, supporting her cheek with one hand, and her elbow with the other. This makes the ironic sorrow that the artist has put into the princess's beautiful face, with its large, pensive eyes, all the more striking and pronounced. The possibility of "fusing" different paints makes the surface of the sculpture similar to semi-precious stones. The sculpture's apparent resemblance to Nadezhda Zabela makes it a kind of portrait of the singer in one of her best opera roles.

VRUBEL, Mikhail (Russian 1856-1910) [illustrator], FISHER, M. [photos] VYSTAVKA RABOT 36TI HUDOZHNIKOV [Exhibition of the 36th Artists], (Moskva: M.A. Fisher, 1901). Folio (300 x 230 mm). Text in Russian. Fragile condition. LOT NOTES "36 Artists was an exhibiting society, formed in 1901 at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Moscow by N.V.Dosekin, V.V.Perepletchikov, A.M.Vasnetsov, S.A.Vinogradov. The 36 Artists group has risen against the inequality of status given to young artists in the Fellowship of Wandering Art Exhibitions (TPKhV). Two exhibitions have been held in the Imperial Stroganov School at Rozhdestvenskaya street: in winter December 1901 - January 02 and December 1902 - January 1903. Participation in the exhibitions was free, without an exhibition committee. Among the participants were M.Kh.Aladzhalov, A.E.Arkhipov, A.N.Benois, O.Braz, A.Ya.Golovin, A.S.Golubkina, K.A.Korovin, S.A.Korovin, E.E.LAncere, S.V.Maliutin, M.V.Nesterov, I.S.Ostroukhov, A.P.Ostroumova-Lebedeva, L.O.Pasternak, A.P.Riabuskin, V.A.Serov, K.A.Somov, the brothers A.M. and V.M.Vasnetsov, S.A.Vinogradov, M.A.Vrubel, M.V.Yakunchikova, K.F.Yuon and others. Some of the names were mostly unknown in Moscow, belonging to members of the Petersburg World of Art movement. The announcement posters for the exhibitions were made by M.A.Vrubel, as bicolor prints performed entirely with words in stylized old-Russian script. The posters listed all the participated artists names and stated that all income from the exhibition are dedicated to charitable organizations of the city of Moscow. As the exhibition was totally democratic and free, it has included a number of genre works and portraits dedicated to country life ("Uprising in a Village" by S.Ivanov; "A Woman in Red", "An Old Woman" and "Peasants" by F.Maliavin, "A Peasant Woman With a Horse" by V.Serov; "An Old Man" by A.Arkhipov). This permeating theme of Russia, which also found its expression in scuplture ("Maria" by A.Golubkina) and in graphic art ("A Stone Bridge, 17 century", by A.Vasnetsov; "Harvest" by Lancere), in painting ("They are coming" by Riabushkin; "The Princess Volkhova" and "The Swan Princess" by M.Vrubel) and in theatre design (A.Golovin's sketches for the opera "Pskovitianka") and in many other works - this was the characteristic of the "36 Artist" exhibition. Encouraged by the success of this experiment, and having perceived a common ground between the artists, they have decided to further develop and expand it. In 1903 the "36 Artists" group along with the World of Art movement have organized the Union of Russian Artists, by this terminating its independent activity." (www.russianavantgard.com)

    Nov. 26, 2014

VRUBEL, MIKHAIL - (1856-1910) Girl with a Wreath

    Est: £120,000 - £150,000

VRUBEL, MIKHAIL (1856-1910) Girl with a Wreath, signed with a monogram. Earthenware with lustred coloured glazes, height 34.5 cm. Executed c. 1897-1900. Provenance: Collection of the prominent art historian Alexei Zotov, Moscow. Thence by descent. Acquired directly from the family of the above by the present owner. Private collection, Europe. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the experts K. Shmakova and O. Strugova. Girl with a Wreath is one of the best-known sculptural images by Mikhail Vrubel. Unlike most of Vrubel's majolica, executed for the greater part in Moscow during the 1920s using the artist's themes from his most famous works, the piece presented for auction is an early Abramtsevo piece, created by the artist in 1897-1900. Variants of this model which also have glazes developed at Abramtsevo, have been frequently exhibited under different, unusual names, including Egyptian Girl with Flowers, reflecting the aura of mystery and romance that is attached to the work. A fantastical play of lilac and pistachio colours, the barely perceptible golden touches with infusions of cobalt give the sculpture a special turn-of-the-century, Symbolist flavour. A certain likeness between the Girl with a Wreath and Vrubel's wife and muse, the opera singer Nadezhda Zabela, invites comparison between this sculpture and the famous painting, Portrait of the Artist's Wife in a Summer Dress in Empire Style, painted in 1898.

    Est: £50,000 - £70,000

VRUBEL, MIKHAIL 1856-1910 Illustration for Alexander Pushkin's "The Robber Brothers" , signed, further stamped by the Imperial Academy of Arts "IAKh... ...OKT 1881" and inscribed "II k". Ink and wash and watercolour on paper, laid on cardboard, 31 by 37 cm. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Ms Knorre, St Petersburg. Important private collection, Germany. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert E. Zhukova. Literature: Iskusstvo i promyshlennost' , No. 1, 1924, p. 29, No. 3, illustrated. Works by the outstanding Russian artist Mikhail Vrubel are extremely rarely encountered outside the museum world. His paintings and drawings always attracted great interest and, over the years, the main body of his work has migrated from the celebrated collections of Sergei Morozov and Adrian Prakhov into those of Russia's greatest museums. Early-period Vrubel is especially interesting for understanding the development of his inimitable style; the fluidity of his line and the depth of his dimensional forms gradually give way to the "broken", mosaic-like techniques that would become the prime stylistic trait of the master. The magnificent Robber Brothers , an illustration for Pushkin's poem of the same name, was created by Mikhail Vrubel in 1881 as a student drawing exercise a year after the artist had enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts. This dynamic and uncommonly mature work reveals strong draughtsmanship, a taut dynamic and skilfully conveyed narrative drama. This work was originally in the collection of Mrs Knorre, who had worked as housekeeper to the Pampel family in St Petersburg. Vrubel was a close friend and lived on and off with the family between 1878 and 1883, when he was tutoring their children. The drawing was published in 1924 in the magazine Iskusstvo i promyshlennost' .
