VROOM, HENDRIK CORNELISZ (Haarlem, ca. 1562- 1640). "Marina", ca. 1620. Oil on canvas

      Est: €50,000 - €60,000

VROOM, HENDRIK CORNELISZ (Haarlem, ca. 1562- 1640). "Marina", ca. 1620. Oil on canvas. Relined. Signed. Measurements: 101 x 155 cm (no frame). With restorations. This important canvas by Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom, the great initiator of paintings of battles and seascapes in Holland, brings together all the stylistic elements that the painter introduced into this genre of painting and which would be emulated by subsequent generations: the superimposition of chromatic bands in which a rough sea makes large boats full of sailors sway, and in the distance, a fragment of coastline blurs into the mist, merging with the sky. Also noteworthy is the meticulous description of the ships, their rigging and the precise movements of each character. And in counterpoint, the atmospheric capture, resolved with an agile brushstroke and very rich in nuances. The sails are bent by a strong wind and the flags are fluttering. The Danish flags can be seen on the galleon in the foreground, while the ships in the distance and those guarding the fortifications on the coast are Dutch. This canvas has remarkable similarities with the painting entitled "Dutch Ships off a Rocky Shore (Greenwich, National Maritime Museum, 1627) and "Naval Combat off a Rocky Shore" in the Museo del Prado (1627-28). Whereas in his early marine paintings the elevated viewpoint dwarfed the ships, in his more mature works he opted for lower horizons, as in this magnificent painting. The Dutch painter Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom was the initiator of the genre of seascapes in the Dutch Golden Age. Vroom would paint the Dutch and English fleets, inspiring many young painters with his innovative compositions. He trained in Delft but his spirit of travel led him to Spain, embarking in Rotterdam around 1586. He later visited Italy and in Rome worked for Cardinal Ferdinand I de' Medici and received painting lessons from Paul Bril. The Villa Colonna in Rome contains a group of marine paintings attributed to Vroom, some of his earliest works. His final return to Haarlem in 1590, after a last trip to Lisbon, coincided with an unprecedented boom in the Dutch navy, both for commercial and military purposes, and he received numerous commissions from the city's municipal government and the High Admiralty to depict Dutch and English naval victories over the Spanish Armada, as well as from the East India Company to "portray" the various Dutch ships loaded with merchandise from Brazil and the East Indies before their departure or on their return. Vroom was also the first to make life drawings of fishermen at work on the beach. In Haarlem he established himself as a marine painter and provided designs for tapestries. He also apprenticed in his studio to Aert Anthonisz, Nicolaes de Kemp and Jan Porcellis, marine painters who continued his style, as did his two sons, Cornelis Hendriksz. Vroom and Frederik. Vroom's biography was written by the art historian Van Mander, known for his collection of biographies of painters (Het Schilder-Boeck, 1604).

      Est: £50,000 - £70,000

PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION A NORTH SEA BEACH SCENE, WITH FISHING PINKS COMING ASHORE AND LARGER VESSELS OFFSHORE measurements note 19.6 by 40 cm.; 7 3/4 by 15 3/4 in. signed on a piece of driftwood lower centre: VROOM oil on oak panel PROVENANCE Sir Bruce Ingram, O.B.E., M.C., bears his collector's mark on a piece of paper affixed to the reverse; His (deceased) sale, London, Sotheby's, 11 March 1964, lot 50, for £850 to the present owner. NOTE Hendrick Vroom was the great pioneer of Dutch marine painting, and a great innovator. Most of his beach scenes are relatively late works, dating from the 1620s and 30s, but there seems to be little development in style during this period. The present example is similar in style and handling to three similar views of the Beach at Scheveningen with Fishing Pinks coming Ashore, one dated 1623, one 1628 and the third 1635[1]. The distant church in the present view is probably also intended to be that of Scheveningen. To judge from the horizon line, it was probably painted before 1630. Sir Bruce Ingram had a superb collection of, among other treasures, marine paintings and drawings, including a very large group of drawings by Willem van de Velde the Elder and Younger bequeathed to the the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, and a group of Dutch drawings including sheets by Hendrick Vroom, bequeathed to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge in 1963. [1] The first was with P. de Boer in 1964 and the third is in a Dutch private collection; for these see M. Russell, Visions of the Sea. Hendrick C. Vroom and the Origins of Dutch Marine Painting, Leiden 1983, p. 155, reproduced p. 157, figs 138 a & b. The second picture, dated 1628, was offered at Christie's in London, 13 December 1991, lot 24.
