ADAM CLARK VROMAN Mission San Fernando CA salt print

          Est: $1,000 - $1,500

ADAM CLARK VROMAN, Mission San Fernando Rey de Espama, 1900, 6.5x9.5" salt print, Printed C. 1900, inscribed in pencil on print verso: 30 / 4. Many photographers around 1900 became interested in the historic process of salted paper printing. Vroman, a consumate chemist, revived the process for a short time in his own work as well. Photographer and Bookseller Adam Clark Vroman (1856-1916) was the leading photographer of the Pasadena, California Arroyo Culture. He was the first important American photographer to use platinum prints to emphasize modernist tones and abstraction. His straightforward portraits of Native Americans, views of ceremonies, architecture, lands and clouds bridge the ethnographic traditions of the 19th century with the objective vision of the 20th. He was the key Western American photographer using modern techniques and materials on living tribes and current traditions, rather than working in cultural preservation of a vanishing race. His landscape work is every bit as emotional as the later landscape work of Ansel Adams, Laura Gilpin, Edward Weston, and Paul Strand. Vroman himself was a favorite subject of his own images while his unadorned straightforward portraits presage the work August Sander. In 1893 he moved to Pasadena and set up Vroman's Bookstore, still in operation, where he sold books as well as photography supplies. He photographed primarily in Arizona and New Mexico. He was not set up to generate revenue from his photography and the vast majority of his work was given by him in albums to his photography collaborators, or to scholars and anthropologists. His primary archive of over 1000 prints in albums are at the Pasadena Public Library and his negatives are at the Seaver Center, Los Angeles County Natural History Museum where the images are online. Andrew Smith Gallery has been the leading dealer and collector of Adam Clark Vroman since the first album if acquired in 1980. ADAM CLARK VROMAN Mission San Fernando Calif

          Est: $1,000 - $1,500

ADAM CLARK VROMAN, Capistrano Mission (Old Walls), c. 1897, 6.25x4" platinum print, Printed C. 1900, titled in ink on mount recto below image Vroman's distincitive handwriting: "Capistrano Mission" (Old Walls); inscribed in pencil: 3. Vroman was the leading platinum printer in America in the early 1900s. Platinum allowed him to emphasize graphic design qualities in ways that other available papers could not. The expansive San Juan Capistrano Mission was initially a small adobe chapel when it was established by Padre Junípero Serra on November 1, 1776. It was the second of 21 Spanish missions founded along the coast of California in the 18th and 19th centuries. The congregation of San Juan Capistrano expanded rapidly over the next 20 years, and in 1797, master stonemason Isidoro Aguilar began the work of replacing the mission's modest chapel with a colossal sandstone church designed to hold 1,300 people. The neoclassical church was laid out in the shape of a Latin cross with an 85 ft wide transept and 167 ft long nave; its roof was formed by eight shallow domes and topped by a 120-foot bell tower. Construction was completed by 1806, but on December 8, 1812, a violent earthquake caused the bell tower to collapse, killing 49 worshippers inside the church. That first catastrophic event began a tumultuous period in the history of the church. Only six years later, French pirates torched several of the mission's peripheral structures. After the declaration of Mexican Independence in 1821, the government expelled the Spanish from California and seized the mission for secular purposes. After the land it was on became part of the United States, the mission was returned to the Catholic Church in 1865 by Abraham Lincoln in a presidential decree. ADAM CLARK VROMAN San Gabriel Mission CA 1908

          Est: $1,000 - $1,500

ADAM CLARK VROMAN, The Bells at San Gabriel Mission, 1897, 6.25x4" platinum print, Printed C. 1900, titled in ink on mount recto below image Vroman's distincitive handwriting: "The Bells of San Gabriel" / (Pasadena) / in pencil: 4 [circled], Vroman was a primary photographer in the California movement to preserve the historic Spanish Missions. He generally gave his photographs to scholars promoting these goals. Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, also known as the San Gabriel Mission, is a former Roman Catholic mission and current historic landmark; it was the fourth of 21 California missions to be founded. The founding date was September 8, 1771, and Padres Pedro Benito Cambon and Angel Fernandes de la Somera were the founding priests. The mission was built from 1791 to 1805 out of cut stone, brick, and mortar, and is the oldest structure of its kind south of Monterey, CA. It was designed by Father Antonio Cruzado, and is often referred to as the "Godmother of the Pueblo of Los Angeles.. Father Cruzado gave the building its strong Moorish architectural influence, with capped buttresses and tall, narrow windows, which are unique among the missions of the California chain. In the early mission era, it came to be known as the "Pride of the Missions" and became the wealthiest of all the early missions due to its large production of crops and trading of cattle hides and wine. On October 1, 1987 the Whittier Narrows Earthquake heavily damaged the mission, but it was fully restored between 1987 and 1993. Today, San Gabriel possesses perhaps the finest collection of mission relics in existence. It has a hammered copper baptismal font that was the gift of King Carlos III of Spain in 1771, and six priceless altar statues that were brought around the Horn from Spain in 1791. Mission San Gabriel Arcangel was added in 1971 as a National Historic Landmark, building #71000158. It is also a California Historical Landmark, No. 158. Two addresses are given for the mission: 428 South Mission Drive, and 537 West Mission Drive at Junipero Street. His primary archive of over 1000 prints in albums are at the Pasadena Public Library and his negatives are at the Seaver Center, Los Angeles County Natural History Museum where the images are online. Platinum Print Album American West A C Vroman 1899

          Est: $50,000 - $75,000

X-RARE WESTERN PLATINUM PRINT PHOTO ALBUM - Collection of (100) Images of the American West by Adam Clark Vroman (American, 1856-1916), bound as part of a series of (16) albums, containing images gathered while contracted by the government, this album is titled 'Pueblos- Taos to Isleta, 1899' and is marked 'A.C. Vroman', bound by Kingsley, Barnes & Neuner in LA in 3/4 leather with cloth covered boards. The Images are 6" x 8" on 9" x 12" sheets, each is numbered in the print and also numbered in the handwritten pencil caption in the lower margin, all in Vroman's own hand. These images were printed directly on the chemically treated paper by exposure to sunlight (technically Platinotypes), this was a time-consuming method, and Vroman made up a very limited number of these albums after completion of his work for the US Bureau of Ethnology in 1899. He had by then established a small book store in Pasadena where he sold these photos individually, and the library in that town is now the repository of his glass negatives and the only known complete set of these albums. This album contains (13) individual portraits of Native Americans, (4) images of dances and (2) images that feature Vroman himself, one of which is a 6 am image of his 'camp' on a desert plateau. The remainder are mostly of structures and landscapes in and around Taos, Picuris, San Juan, Santa Clara (including the Governor and his family), San Ildefonso (including Gov Francisco Vigil), Pojoaque (inc Gov Antonio Montaya), Nambe, Tseuque (inc Gov Elias Suazo), Cochie, Santo Domingo (inc Corn Dance, some portraits of dancers in costume), San Felipe, the Rio Grande, Santa Ana (inc image of the only three men in the Pueblo), Sia (inc Gov Antonio Sala), Jemez (inc Juan Pecos, the last of the Pecos), Sandia. Album binding is worn, leather chafed, contents are very good, each page is bound in by cloth tape, some cross-toning to backs but image sides are fine. An exceptional collection. From a Blue Hill Maine estate.
