C.F.A. VOYSEY (1857-1941) RARE FIRE SURROUND, CIRCA 1905 cast iron 122cm high, 168.3cm wide, 19.5cm deep Literature: Thomas Elsley Ltd., Catalogue of Designs by C. F. A. Voysey, Architect, no.330, where this example is illustrated as a line drawing.Voysey C.F.A. Reason as a basis of art, 1906 p.24.Note: Voysey's fireplace designs exhibit a startlingly modern simplicity, in contrast to the 'distracting' ornament which had typified the Victorian hearth. If simplicity pervaded Voysey's approach, it was enlivened with familiar motifs which he used elsewhere, in this instance the heart and the perched bird. Writing in 1906 he asked his readers to “consider the average fireplace in the average home and count the number of different materials and colours of which it is composed. Is it conducive to restfulness and quiet reflection? Or is this whirl-wind of countless sensations needed to drown out our sober thought? Are bustle and discord necessary to our home life?"

CIRC.886-1967Note: The design was originally used as a wallpaper and was later adapted by the manufacturer Alexander Morton for this woollen textile, for transparent gauzes and for carpeting. Voysey's stylised birds and trees became his trademark, and symbolic of the Arts & Crafts movement. The fabric was sold through Liberty's shop in Regent Street. By the end of the 19th century the shop created what was described as 'a new English period' establishing a reputation as the main retailer of British Arts and Crafts goods.

C.F.A. Voysey, Arts and Crafts designer V&A 2016, p. 178 Note: This mirror formed part of the furnishings designed for the offices of The Essex & Suffolk Equitable Insurance Company commissioned from Voysey in 1906 by General Manager Sydney Claridge-Turner. Voysey also designed 'The Homestead' and Frinton-on-Sea for Turner in 1905 and the mirror may have first been used there. The insurance company offices were taken over by stockbroker Chase, Henderson and Tennant who retained the furnishings and fittings. When some Voysey furnishings were stripped out of the premises in the 1960s, one of the partners, E.H. Brooks, found suitable homes for as many pieces as possible. Recipients included Charles and Lavinia Handley-Read, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the William Morris Gallery. The Victorian Society received a side table and the mirror being sold in this lot. Original drawings for this mirror in the RIBA collections are dated 1906 and 1908 (versions with one and two knobs on each drawer) and include examples with mouldings around the drawers, as in the current lot, which has a RIBA reference SB116/VOY [392]. This mirror matches another example illustrated in the bedroom of Holly Mount, a house designed by Voysey in Buckinghamshire, and photographed in 1907. Contemporary photographs in The Studio and Decorative Kunst show examples of mirrors in other styles made in the 1890s.

He did however specify other materials when he felt them appropriate, in particular, if the other furniture in the house was of a differing material or when specified by a client. He reiterated this to Arthur Simpson of Kendal in 1909 stating that “You must have oak everywhere or nowhere. I will not be a party to the mixture.” A scarce example of his work in mahogany was a commission from the painter Edward Hughes who asked Voysey to design a corner sideboard for his house at 7, Lodge Place in St. John’s Wood in 1898. Voysey obtained quotations for the piece from Frederick Coote in mahogany and deal and mahogany was chosen. Other examples include a fitted scheme in mahogany for Leslie Paton at 29 Harley Street, London in 1919, although no records are known for moveable furniture. An entry in Voysey's black book a G.W. Glynn at 8 Netherhall Gardens in 1910 includes a music cabinet and other unspecified 'furniture'. The current lot and its companion, lot 58, were presumably from a similar commission where mahogany was the more appropriate material.
