      Est: $12,000 - $15,000

Franklin Voss Famous American Thoroughbreds (set of 12) Hand Colored Engravings 18 x 22.50 in Signed and numbered 192/260. Provenance: Arthur Ackermann & Son The complete set of 12 Hand Coloured Prints After Original Paintings of Famous American Thoroughbreds by Franklin Brooke Voss. Various numbers from an edition of 260. In Richard Stone Reeves’ introduction to Crown Jewels of Thoroughbred Racing, he mentions only Franklin B. Voss as among the other great equestrian artists over the past three centuries. Voss was held in such high esteem that his client list for commissions was a veritable “who’s who” of the sporting world at the time. Given such popularity, it is no surprise that the rest of the public desired his work as well. In 1934 a set of 10 hand-colored prints of famous racehorses, after paintings by Voss, was offered for $250, and $30 for a single print. Noted printmakers At the Sign of the Gosden Head, the same company that produced the popular prints of Edward Troye’s work, published the set with the plan to release more in the following years. Gosden Head published the 11th print in 1936 and The Sporting Gallery and Bookshop Inc., New York published the 12th in 1940. Due to company buyouts, the series was discontinued. Each print was signed and numbered by Voss who painted a square in the owner’s colors in the lower right corner. At the bottom of each print is a biography of the horse written by legendary turf writer Neil “Roamer” Newman. Newman had taken “Roamer” as his pseudonym after the racehorse Roamer, Horse of the Year in 1914 and 1915 and for whom a stakes race at New York’s Jamaica Race Course was named. Franklin Voss - The Middlesex Foxhounds in the Millbrook Country

      Est: $8,000 - $10,000

Franklin Brooke Voss (American, 1880–1953) THE MIDDLESEX FOXHOUNDS IN THE MILLBROOK COUNTRY $8,000. – $10,000. Oil on canvas, 16” x 24” Signed, dated 1921 $8,000. – 10,000. Provenance: Margaret Sargent Whitney, Millbrook, New York Thence by family descent Illustrated: Alexander Henry Higginson, Two Centuries of Foxhunting, London: Collins, 1946, page 146 Peter Winants, The Sporting Art of Franklin B. Voss, Lexington: Eclipse Press, 2005, pages 90 and 91 A copy of each book will be included in the lot. This painting has also alternately been titled Mr. Higginson’s Hounds in Millbrook’s Territory. Founded in 1899 by Alexander Henry Higginson, the Middlesex Hounds soon came to be regarded as one of the best in the country. Their base was in South Lincoln, Massachusetts, but due to the difficult terrain, they traveled to other hunts the majority of the time. In 1905 they participated against Harry Worcester Smith’s Grafton Hounds in the Great Foxhound Match, an event that took place in Virginia’s Piedmont region, and tested Higginson’s contention that English hounds were superior to the American hounds that Smith favored. Starting in 1907, the Middlesex Hounds often hunted the Millbrook Hunt’s territory and continued this practice for many years at the invitation of Millbrook’s MFH. After Higginson disbanded his kennel, many were sold to the Millbrook Hunt, where he later served as master for three seasons. The Millbrook Hunt, founded in the 1890s, is still regarded as one of the premier hunts in the nation. Mrs. Whitney, an accomplished horsewoman herself, is believed to be depicted riding sidesaddle on the far right of the work.

      Franklin Voss - Nimba

      Est: $25,000 - $30,000

Franklin Brooke Voss (American, 1880–1953) NIMBA $25,000. – $30,000. Oil on canvas, 28” x 36” Signed, dated 1927 $25,000. – 30,000. Illustrated: John Hervey, Racing in America 1922–1936, privately printed for the New York Jockey Club by The Scribner Press, 1937, page 96 Champion 3-year-old filly of 1927, Nimba had her knocks. Her 2-year-old campaign had to be delayed after she was kicked in the stifle in the spring. She won her only start at 2. Then over the winter before her championship season, she was kicked in the jaw and it was feared she would miss another summer. But she won the Coaching Club American Oaks, the Alabama Stakes, and the Lawrence Realization Stakes at 3. Nimba opened her 4-year-old season on May 26, 1928, winning the Metropolitan Handicap, pulling away from the colts. But after that victory she began to sulk and never returned to form. Bred in Kentucky by Arthur B. Hancock, Nimba was sold privately as a yearling to Marshall Field III, who raced her and returned her to Claiborne Farm as a broodmare. Her first foal was Nimbus, who ran second in the 1933 Belmont Stakes for his breeder. Harold Thurber’s greatest achievement might have been guiding Nimba throughout her racing career. Born in North Dakota in 1892, Thurber rode as a jockey in Louisiana, Kentucky, and New York. Twice he applied to ride in Cuba. He passed away in California in 1968. On pages 96 and 97 of Racing in America 1922–1936, Nimba is discussed thoroughly. “Jock, Justice F., Black Panther, War Eagle, Rolled Stocking, Hydromel, and Kentucky II were other three-year-olds that raced prominently, but aside from the group previously mentioned, it was two fillies that stood out, with Nimba the real prima donna. She had, as all prima donnas should, exquisite beauty, the artistic temperament, and the capacity to do dazzling things. While both her sire, War Cloud, son of Polymelus, and her dam, Martha Snow, were bred in England, she had an American strain maternally, as Martha Snow (also dam of Calumet Dick and granddam of Privileged) was by the Ogden horse, Sir Martin, that John E. Madden had originally taken to England to race. War Cloud, imported as a yearling by Mr. A. K. Macomber, had raced here with distinction, winning the Preakness, Dwyer, and other stakes, after which he was sent to France, subsequently returning here to enter the Claiborne Stud, where after making one season, that of 1923, having accidentally broken a leg he had to be destroyed. Nimba was bred by Mr. Hancock and bought privately as a yearling by Mr. Marshall Field. She raced but once at two, winning a purse event. At three she won five of her nine starts, giving a grand exhibition in the Realization, as she led from end to end and won in hand by three lengths from Brown Bud and Flippant, with Bostonian, Valorous, and Chance Shot toiling after her in vain. Only once before had the American equivalent of the St. Leger been won by a filly, Vexatious, in 1919, but on that occasion she did not finish first, Over There, who did, being disqualified. As no other filly since Nimba has succeeded in it, she therefore ranks as the only one of her sex to score a clean-cut, unequivocal victory. Moreover, she also won the Coaching Club American Oaks, our equivalent of the Epsom Oaks, leading all the way and beating Frilette three lengths; at Saratoga she took the historic Alabama Stakes, carrying 124 pounds and giving 10 pounds each to La Palina and Recreation, second and third, and in the Travers split Brown Bud and Valorous. At four she triumphed in the Metropolitan, another event which her sex has found it almost impossible to win. She was bred at five but has not, as a matron, emulated her turf record, which closed with seven races out of thirteen starts and $74,045. Nimba was a chestnut, with a penciling of white between her eyes and a filly of almost faultless beauty of the most patrician type, her head and neck being cameo-like in fineness and her limbs as slim and shapely as a fawn’s.”

Franklin Brooke Voss - Peacock with Anderson Fowler Up

      Est: $20,000 - $25,000

Franklin Brooke Voss (American, 1880-1953) PEACOCK WITH ANDERSON FOWLER UP $20,000. – 25,000. Oil on canvas, 28” x 36” Signed, dated 1939 $20,000. – 25,000. Provenance: Commissioned by Anderson Fowler, 1939; Thence by descent; Estate of Elizabeth “Binnie” Houghton Illustrated: Peter Winants, The Sporting Art of Franklin B. Voss, 2005. p. 79 Exhibited: The Voss Family: Artists of American Sporting Life, National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Saratoga Springs, New York, July 2007-January 2008 (Illustrated in catalogue) Anderson Fowler was a lifelong horseman and sporting enthusiast. At Princeton, he is remembered as a character who “played polo, rode in amateur jump races, and played an excellent hand of bridge.” In a 1988 interview in The Blood- Horse, Fowler humbly said, “I’m afraid that I didn’t get much accomplished as a student because I was always involved in hunt meets and other sporting activities.” Despite this statement, he went on to accomplish many things. Fowler rode Peacock, the horse pictured here, to victory in hunt meetings up and down the Eastern seaboard in the 1930s. Fowler purchased Peacock from fellow amateur rider, friend, and future brother-in-law Carroll Bassett in the spring of 1933. Several weeks later Fowler, aboard Peacock, lost by a nose to Bassett and Marion du Pont Scott’s legendary Battleship in the Country Club Race Meet at Brookline, Massachusetts. Peacock quickly put this loss behind him and won several more races that year. His win at Far Hills, near Fowler’s home in New Jersey, was described in the New York Times as “an easy four-length triumph.” Amateur riders such as Fowler and Bassett rode in country hunt meets held on farms instead of racetracks. They formed a tight-knit community that included the Voss family. Foxhunting was often included in a horse’s training, the speed of the chase conditioning horses perfectly to racing over hills and fences. Many horses were hunted during the week and raced, with their owners in the stirrups, at regional hunt meets on weekends. Fowler was a lifelong resident of Gladstone, New Jersey, near Far Hills. He was the master of the Essex Foxhounds, president of the New Jersey Thoroughbred Breeders Association, board member and treasurer of Monmouth Park, and a member of The Jockey Club. He served in the Army in World War II, first instructing horsemanship at Fort Riley, Kansas, where one of his pupils was heavyweight-boxing champion Joe Louis. Fowler later saw action in the Pacific, participating in the landing at Leyte with General Douglas MacArthur. Following the war, he served in the New Jersey legislature for eight years as an assemblyman. (Later he would name one of his homebred winners Assemblyman). Fowler once jokingly said, “I ran for practically every office in Somerset County. My only claim to fame in politics was that I never lost an election.” Assemblyman was one of many homebred stakes winners. Others include Baitman, Raritan Valley, and Master Speaker. The homebred Green Alligator impressively won the 1991 California Derby and went on to finish fourth in the 1991 Kentucky Derby. Fowler kept his broodmares at Buckingham Farm in Maryland, which was owned and operated by his daughter Binnie and her husband, Eddie. Anderson Fowler died in 1997.

Franklin Brooke Voss - Jane Fowler Bassett

      Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Franklin Brooke Voss (American, 1880-1953) JANE FOWLER BASSETT $15,000. – 20,000. Oil on canvas, 25 1⁄4” x 30” Signed, dated 1943 $15,000. – 20,000. Provenance: The Estate of Elizabeth “Binnie” Houghton Jane Fowler grew up in Gladstone, New Jersey, graduated from Foxcroft School in Virginia in 1932 and made her debut in New York that winter. In 1934 she married Carroll Bassett, a sculptor, amateur steeplechase jockey, and friend of her brother Anderson. The marriage ended unhappily several years later, but Mrs. Bassett retained her ex-husband’s last name for the rest of her life. Voss painted the Fowler and Bassett families on numerous occasions. A portrait of Anderson Fowler is included in this sale. Anderson, or “Andy” to Jane, purchased the horse he is pictured on from his sister’s future husband. To say that the steeplechasing and foxhunting community of the 1930s was close knit might be an understatement. Later in life Jane Fowler Bassett settled in Monkton, Maryland, and hunted with the Elkridge-Harford Hounds. Voss was a regular with the Elkridge-Harford (his brother Ned was the master) and knew Mrs. Bassett well. He included her in a group painting of the 1943 Thanksgiving meeting of the hounds, quite possibly using this painting as a point of reference for the group portrait. Later Mrs. Bassett commissioned Voss to paint a portrait of the Elkridge-Harford Hounds on scent and running over a coop. This composition, with Mrs. Bassett slightly off-center and details of the landscape and foxhunt in the background, was a standard one for Voss and one he developed early in his career. The background in this portrait is more detailed than many of Voss’ other portraits, perhaps due to his fondness for the Maryland countryside.

Provenance: The Estate of Elizabeth “Binnie” Houghton Exhibited: The Voss Family: Artists of American Sporting Life, National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Saratoga Springs, New York. July 2007-January 2008. (Illustrated in the exhibition catalogue) Voss painted commissioned portraits of foxhounds and other dogs throughout his career. Many of his early commissions were of dogs, and eighty percent of the 1912 entries in his commission book were for paintings of dogs. Voss probably painted this American foxhound for Anderson Fowler in 1939, the same year he painted the portrait of Fowler on Peacock, also in this sale. Fowler was a master of the Essex Foxhounds in New Jersey.

Provenance: The Estate of Elizabeth “Binnie” Houghton The Far Hills Race Meeting traces its origins to the Essex Hunt, a foxhunt founded in Montclair, New Jersey in 1870. In 1913 the organizers of the Essex Hunt incorporated as the Essex Fox Hounds. In the tradition of these clubs, the Essex Fox Hounds established an event to thank the farmers and landowners who allowed them to hunt on their property. The Farmer’s Day Race Meeting, as it became known, included the New Jersey Hunt Cup Steeplechase — a race that remains on the Far Hills Race Meeting card today. Voss, as a mid-Atlantic jump-racing enthusiast, would have attended the races there annually. In 1916, the event moved from the original club site to the Grant B. Schley estate — today known as Moorland Farm, pictured here. Eventually becoming the Far Hills Race Meeting, the races have been run continually — with the exception of a short hiatus during World War II — on the same site. The Far Hills Race Meeting currently offers some of the richest purses in America and is home to one of the best fall tailgating scenes in the country. The 2018 meet marks its 98th anniversary.
