Vonn Stropp Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1962 -

Vonn Ströpp or Vonn Stropp (born 1962, in Stanwell, England) is the most-used of over 123 pseudonyms used by an Outsider Art painter whose work has been described as "a kind of pre-Raphaelite psychedelia".[1]

The son of a schizophrenic Irish father, he speaks of a dismal childhood. He is one of five children.[2] Self-taught artistically, he began at age eleven to have what he described as visionary experiences. After dropping out of school, and working several low-level jobs, he began to paint obsessively. Von Ströpp, who used to live in Hounslow, claims that, for him, the experience of painting is very painful, which he compares to crucifixion. An oil painter, with a surrealist style somewhat comparable to that of Salvador Dalí, his works are mainly scenes and landscapes, often with apocalyptic overtones.

His work has been widely exhibited at venues including the Collection de l'art brut, Lausanne, the American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore, and the Bethlem Royal Hospital Museum. Jimmy Page and Michael Stipe are collectors.[3]

§ Vonn Ströpp (1962-) Dogsbody signed 'DIPL-INC VONN STRÖPP' (top left); further signed and titled to the reverse oil on board, unframed 122.5 x 81cm In addition to his 123 pseudonyms, Surrey-born artist Vonn Ströpp, who has gained widespread recognition for his arcane, and often peculiar, compositions, is also known as an outsider, visionary and impenetrable enigma. Struggling with addiction, poverty and mental health difficulties, Vonn Ströpp’s parents were ill-equipped to offer their five children a stable and nurturing environment. This was to have a profound impact on Vonn Ströpp, who has since described his formative years as ‘grey, overcast, an eternal hangover’. Largely raising himself, at eleven years old, Von Ströpp began experiencing ecstatic visions, which were swiftly transcribed to paper in compulsive bursts of creativity. Vonn Ströpp's artistic oeuvre isn't driven by the desire for public exhibition or as a mere vocation; instead, it is an obsession, a relentless force beyond his control. He describes this relentless pursuit as a crucifixion of sorts, a painful and all-consuming experience. In the chaos of existence, his canvases and sketchpads offer a sanctuary - a means to impose clarity and order upon the turbulent world that swirls around him.
